Mayan Palace

Best Things Nearby:
Playa Del Carmen, X-Caret Natural Theme Park, Xel-Ha Natural Theme Park, Cozumel.

Best Things About the Resort:
Swimming pool, great food (but expensive), daily maid service.

Resort Experience:
We were basically disappointed with our accommodations at the Mayan Palace. We were in a "B" unit and it seemed that they cut corners everywhere. There was a single bed-side table between 2 double beds so one of us had no table. There was no coffee pot or iron or ironing board. Think of your basic small motel room with no ammenities, and double-beds to boot.

The food was excellent but so expensive that we didn't eat there very often. Fortunately we had a car because we spent very little time at the resort, instead prefering to visit the surrounding area. The only thing great about the place is the swimming pool. One day we decided to try it out but we didn't know the routine of reserving a shady place very early or not getting one for the rest of the day. Fortunately there was some shade provided by a palm tree, and there was plenty down by the non-swimmable beach.

We went on the high-pressure sales talk and they still seemed to think we might buy in after we said we didn't even like the place. But part of the deal was a free breakfast and 15% off all meals and drinks for the week, so it was worth it to put up with the sales talk.

Someday when they get more of it built, there will be more to see and do at the resort, but I still recommend renting a car at the airport. We got a pretty good deal as we were about the only people there vying for all of the rental car people standing around -- it was definitely a buyer's market.

If you do plan to go there, definitely get the "A" unit and definitely rent a car unless your idea of fun is to sit by the pool all week.

On the plus side, everything was extremely clean and the staff was very friendly (but don't miss turning your swimming pool towel in or you'll pay a hefty fee for being late).

Xcaret Park and Playa del Carmen.

Best Things About the Resort:
It's new! The beach is also great.

Resort Experience:
See journal five star for real. The golf course should be done in fall 2003. Don't go on the sales tour unless you're interested in buying - high presure sales force. It may have Cancun's largest pool.

Best Things Nearby:
Mayan ruins, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen.

Best Things About the Resort:
Great accomodations. Exquisite pools. Partial kitchens. Lots and lots to do.

Resort Experience:
A huge, rambling resort. There is soon to be a Jack Nicklaus golf course. There are restaurants, gift shops, a grocery store, and a hair salon. It's very well- kept. Kid's and adult's activities are offered throughout the day.

There is a handful of Mayan Palace resorts throughout Mexico. This one is still under construction but will be beautiful when completed. There's a great web site for info ().

Best Things Nearby:
It is located in the middle of Playa del Carmen to the south and Puerto Morelos, to the north. Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum, Aktun-Cha are all within an hour drive. Puerto Morelos is 15 minutes away and it a quiet little fishing town. Lots of good restaurants and shops. The fisherman will take you out in a boat to fish and snorkel. Take the bus from the Mayan Palace (50 cents)and then a short taxi ride from the main highway (no more than $2). Playa del Carmen is about 25 minutes away. It is a town bustling with people, nightlife, restaurants, and nightclubs. You can take the ferry from here to Cozumel.

Best Things About the Resort:
There is a gigantic interactive swimming pool -- could be the largest in the world. Two swim up bars, a whirlpool, fountains, and water polo area are contained in the pool. Very friendly staff and very good food. There are daily activities for adults and children -- water polo, water aerobics, crafts, dance classes, volleyball, etc. There is a buffet --all-you-can-eat breakfast and dinner as well as a nightclub and an a la carte restaurant.

Resort Experience:
This resort will be fantastic when it is finished. There are plans for two more restaurants, a Jack Nicklaus golf course, and built-in canals for paddling and snorkling. Right now the resort is not finished but there are two restaurants and a bar. The pool is fantastic and everyone seems happy here. Rooms are nice although there are no ocean views and the balconies are not large enough to stay out on. They do not face anything interesting - mostly construction at the moment.

We stayed in a one bedroom unit. The bedroom had a double bed. Two sofas pull out into two more single beds. There is one bathroom. The kitchen had four burners, a refrigerator, cups, plates, pots and pans and a microwave, but no oven. They do not supply dish soap - you must buy your own. Cleaning service was not regular - once they came in at 6:30 at night. You cannot walk into the ocean from the beach as there are coral and rocks on the ocean floor that have not been removed due to government regulations.

Prices are lower now because the resort is not finished. Food and drink prices are high. Rent a car if you really want to get around the area and explore the ruins. You can use public transportation and that is cheap if you leave the resort and walk to the highway. If you are not an owner, you can get freebies by taking a tour. Be warned that it is a high pressure tour. From my experience you are promised many things that are not true in reality. You''ll have a better time if you don''t do the tour. They have not begun much work on the golf course and won''t say when it is going to be finished. But all in all if you like the resort life, you will be happy sitting around the pool and sipping a pina colada.

Great place to stay - very good restaurant. Try the prawns in Curry $10 - just order it mild. Nightly show at the gardens - sometimes they have local vendors at night - I bought a beautiful painting. Rooms are very spacious - great A/C, fresh fruit basket every day - great service, friendly people. Our room had two seating areas. We had a toilet problem but they fixed it right away after we called for service. Indoor pool great for laps and large jacuzzi - dry and steam saunas was great after sightseeing. They also offer elephant and camel rides but we did this at the Amber Palace instead. Also, they were able to provide medication for my mom who came down with a case of 'Maharanas Revenge' :)
