Fiesta Americana Vacation Club

The 2 bedroom unit had 3 balconies overlooking the Gulf, plenty of room for 4 adults, jacuzzi tub, very clean, easy access to the pool area or beach. Restaurant on site was excellent and affordable. The bus stopped right near the resort and ran often. The shopping was very close and much fun bargaining. Great buys during hurricane season. If you go, don't miss the Mexican Fiesta-good food, drinks, and super entertainment. This was our first timeshare vacation with HGVC and we would go there again.

We arrived a bit before check-in time and were told to relax a bit until the room was ready. It was around lunchtime so we ate at La Palapas - the on-site restaurant. When we were finished we re-checked at the desk and a room was ready. The bellboy followed us up to the room and it turns out that we were the not-so-happy owners of a room that faced the new concrete skyscraper next-door with a nice little green fuzzy pool of water on the ground. We would be living in this room for 8 nights, and weren't happy with it. We went directly back down to the desk and explained our case. We only had to wait about 10 minutes and another room was ready. This room had a view of the little "village" which overlooked the pool and beach. It was very nice. No hard feelings - they were very nice about changing rooms for us. The accommodations were exactly the same as we remembered - very nice. When we didn't have any warm water the second night it did make us recall that this happened the first time several times as well. We're not sure why, but when we called down to the desk to report it, they said it should be fine in several hours! We weren't very happy about that as we'd have liked to take showers before dinner. The daily maid service was excellent, but not timely, so we never knew when our room was going to be made up. If you decide to sleep in or have a late lunch, housekeeping will hang a sign on your door saying they only offer housekeeping until 4pm. One warning that we forgot to mention the first trip is that the beds are considerably shorter than in the U.S. My husband is over six feet tall and his poor feet dangle over the edge. I thought it was pretty funny, but, alas, he did not. Another noteworthy tip is to buy laundry detergent when you go shopping. Free laundry room privileges are included in your stay, but detergent is not provided.

There were only two noticeable differences from last year. Felix, who runs the games and sports program at the pool, was only provided with 8 free drink tickets per day. Last year he had an almost unlimited amount to give out as prizes for winning the games. This was a very welcome refreshment after playing water polo or pool volleyball. We were a bit disappointed that he was limited in the number he could give out this year. He said that the management has changed their policy on this lately. The other main difference is that now the resort has a mexican party once a week. It was about $50 per person and included the buffet, unlimited drinks and entertainment. It was an excellent experience.

We stayed at the FAVC in Cancun for 7 days and for the most part were very impressed with the accommodations and especially with the friendly service and great food at the Palapa Restaurant. They originally had us booked on the first floor's east side. After checking into the room, we found that although the one-bedroom unit was great, there was not much of a view. We asked for a different accommodation the next morning and they happily moved us to the fifth floor over the lobby with great great views of the pool area, the beach, and the island. The pool area is kept immaculate and the pool was great. Not a big beach but we found it to be quite nice sitting under one of the palapas. The only complaint was that there does not seem to be much hot water in the morning for showers, but after about 4pm there is all the hot water you could want, so we just adjusted a bit and took showers in the evening.

The FAVC is in easy walking distance to major malls such as the forum and several good restaurants such as the Argentine Steak House and the Hard Rock Café. You can take a bus a bit further down hotel row and if you like American food there is the Outback, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville, Bubba Gump's, and others.

They also exchange currency right at the resort, which was very helpful.

The only comment is if you are renting a car, watch the speed zones very carefully. It seems that they target visitors and rental cars. The policia also are corrupt and would much rather accept cash than write a ticket. I should know; after all, it cost me $60 at 4:30 in the morning on my way to the airport. It was very evident that the officer wanted money and was not interested in writing a citation. Next time we will arrange with FAVC and get transportation back and forth from the resort and then take public buses and taxis.

We stayed in a one-bedroom with a fully equipped kitchen and a nice living area with a couch and chairs, a large TV, stereo, DVD player, etc. (which we never had to watch or use because there was so much to see and do), with its own slider opening out onto a good-size balcony with a pool and ocean view. The other side of this apartment had a good-size bathroom, Jacuzzi tub big enough for two, and a separate bedroom with a king-size bed and another slider opening onto the same balcony. (By the way, that unusual "sitting area" in the bathroom mentioned by a previous member is where the Jacuzzi equipment is hidden).

The whole experience was incredible: the service and staff were great and the location is perfect, right in the heart of the Hotel Zone and walking distance from restaurants, flea market and storefront shopping, and those famous Cancun nightclubs. The resort is right on the water, with a panoramic view of the northwest part of the strip leading to downtown Cancun to the west and Isla Mujeres to the east. At night you can sit out on the beach (excellent security, so you feel safe but not bothered), hear the gentle waves caress the shore, and watch the sunset, then relax as the lights come on across the water and the stars appear above with a gentle breeze, cooling off the 80-degree January night. It doesn't get any better than this.

The best restaurants nearby are "La Joya," two hotels away in the unbelievable Grand Coral Beach, the world-class flagship hotel of the Fiesta Americana chain. Make sure you go when the "Mexican Ballet" is performing. This restaurant was recommended by Travel Channel on their "Best Mexican Beach Resorts" program, as was that hotel itself, and it did not disappoint us in the least.

"Alfredo Di Roma" is less then 5 minutes away and is the strip's best-kept secret. It's an amazing Italian restaurant with impeccable service, atmosphere (with romantic music playing softly in the background), and amazingly reasonable prices. We had three glasses of wine for me, two cocktails for the wife, an appetizer, two incredible dinners, coffee, and spectacular desserts, and our bill, including a 20% tip (not required but much deserved), came to just under $100 for the two of us.

This was our second trip to Cancun. We went in 2005 before the hurricane and were amazed at how this destination has not only completely recovered from that disaster, but has actually improved. We will go back every year.
