Westin Maui

Westin Maui

After a short hop from Moloka'i, we were ready to kick our shoes off and relax. My now fiancée (we were engaged two days earlier) worked for a Starwood Hotel so we often plan our travels around available employee room rates. For the second half of our vacation on Maui we were making use of this rate. Unfortunately, that left us spending one night at the Westin Maui since our preferred hotel (Westin’s Ka’anapali Resort Ocean Villas) did not have a rate available for our first night on the island. Our goal was to make the most of our night and morning as there is so much to do at this resort!

The Westin Maui has been around for a while, but walking through the front doors, that is not immediately evident. The open air lobby area is stunning. A large pond backed by a picturesque waterfall is mesmerizing. The hotel is crescent-shaped with a huge pool area ensconced between the buildings and that delectable strip of white sand known as Ka’anapali Beach. Most of the pools are connected by channels or slides. You can’t leave without trying out the waterslide. But hotel standards, this one is great!

One can use superlatives to describe the public areas of this hotel. However, that sentiment did not translate to the rooms from the public spaces. Upon entering our room, one may turn right and enter a powder room area that is separated from the room by a counter. The actual bathroom contained the toilet and a small combination bath and shower. Having stayed in a fair amount of Westins, it is apparent that there is a lot of latitude in what constitutes a ‘Heavenly Bath’ experience. In this case, the only upgrade came from installing the dual showerhead in the shower. This was actually detrimental as the bathroom was smallish already. Adding those big showerheads made the water come out around my shoulders. I am less than 6’ tall so I’m not used to having this happen.

The room was tastefully decorated in dark woods. I find it possible to put a date on the hotel by taking a look at the sliding door to the lanai. They usually don’t consider things like that during renovations. The lanai itself was very nice and fairly spacious. Our 6th floor room overlooked the golf course and mountains.

Parking can be a chore at the hotel. By a chore I mean there isn’t enough. In the off season, this shouldn’t be a problem.Thankfully they offer complimentary valet parking when this happens.

All in all, I gave the hotel 4 out of 5 orange blobs. I would give the activities, location and grounds 5 out of 5. The room and value for the money would only receive 3 out of 5 blobs. I was happy to only be paying the employee rate (plus the $18 per day resort fee). My review wouldn’t have been as kind if I had paid the public rate.

This hotel is far and away the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The heavenly beds are worth the price of this hotel alone. We opted for the ocean view lower level in the main tower (cheapest room) and we were blown away with how nice it was. We had a great view, and a waterfall outside our door that put us to sleep every night. The staff was great, and the breakfast buffet (while a little pricey) was well worth it. The pools are amazing, and plenty large so kids can play as can adults. Plus the adults only pool is a nice extra as well. If you want to make a vacation in Maui that you'll never forget, do yourself a favor and stay at this hotel, you'll thank yourself later.

The Westin Maui Resort and Spa

The Westin Maui was my number-one choice from all my research at the time, and remains our number-one choice once we go back.

This hotel boosts five separate pools overlooking the ocean and beach. It is within walking distance of Whaler's Village (which includes a convenience store) as well as a neat little excursion-planning hut. Upon walking in, you will experience an open lobby that includes a pond filled with flamingos. We got "lei'd" (me a flower one, my husband a grass one) when we arrived, and the staff was attentive in getting our luggage to our rooms.

Our hotel room was sizable, with a nice marble bathroom; a medium-size counter to keep your purse, wallet, keys and other miscellaneous items; and, per Westin's website, a Heavenly bed. Don't be too fooled by the term "heavenly." I was surprised to find that our bed at home was more heavenly than the one at the Westin, as I would say the thread count at the Westin was 300 to 400, whereas at our house the sheets have a 650 thread count. So, in my humble opinion, the sheets were a little rough, but my bed at home sets the bar pretty high. The hotel room also had one of those arched shower-curtain rods, so the shower felt pretty large.

We had an ocean-side view, which was very nice for watching the sunset. If you can splurge, purchase this view.

A way to save some money on this room is to sign up to be a Starwood Preferred Guest through spg.com. We ended up getting a pretty good rate, plus 1 night free, just by signing up. We paid about $230/night.

Overall, we love this resort and would stay here again.

Being greeted at the door with lei’s was a nice touch and a clue that this isn't your everyday vacation hotel. You walk through the wide sliding glass doors and ahead of you is a waterfall surrounded with pools of koi, flamingoes, and swans. The hotel is open to the outside in the back, and the pools around the waterfall will lead you out to 87,000 sq. ft. of an aquatic playground for people of all ages. There are five free-form swimming pools to swim in, a secluded Jacuzzi to relax in, an adult-only pool for those who left them at home, and a waterslide with 270-degree turns and a dramatic 23-ft. drop. The pretty patios have tables to chat around, and bar and restaurant, and if you keep walking, eventually you're on the beach with fantastic views of Lanai and Molokai. Two championship golf courses and an 11-court tennis center are just a short walk away. The workout gym is fully equipped, and has windows overlooking Kaanapali Beach. Within the spa facility, you'll find a beauty salon. If you are traveling with children, they do offer a kids camp for an extra fee.

Our room was the size of a normal hotel room, but the bed was very comfortable and the comforter was down filled. There was a small refrigerator and coffeemaker. Countertops were granite. We had a mountain view that was beautiful. We sat on the little terrace which had a small table and two chairs, and drank a little wine there before going to dinner, looking over the golf course and up to the mountain. The decor was pleasing to the eye and relaxing with neutrals.

One draw-back of the room was that there was not much room to unpack. There was a wardrobe that housed the television on one side and had a small pole to hang clothes on the other. Drawers were under the television. It made the room prettier this way, but was not practical.

The location was excellent. We walked next door to the Whaler's Village, which has restaurants and fun shops. A two-minute drive to Lahaina, which we loved. Lahaina has boat charters, and shows as well as great restaurants and shopping. The Sheraton is their sister hotel, and we used their facilities to snorkel Black Rock. My husband came face-to-face with a sea turtle there!

The Westin Maui

The Westin is a beautiful hotel with by far the best pool in Kaanapali for kids and adults. The location can't be beat, right next to Whaler's Village in the heart of the beach. Luxurious accomodations, amazing service, and so much more. The rooms were so comfortable it was hard to leave. The gym is state of the art! We received several free gifts throughout our stay.
