Our stay on the island of Maui was split between two hotels. With Maui being the second largest island in Hawaii, it made sense to stay at separate properties to reduce driving times from hotel to attraction. In Western Maui, we stayed at the Best Western Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, but discovered driving to the eastern side of the island could take up most of the day. To reduce driving time and maximize our fun, we stayed at the Maui Lu Resort in Kihei, located on the southern part of the island.

The Maui Lu Resort is a budget hotel with rooms and amenities matching those of five star resorts. The hotel has 120 rooms on two floors with one king or two double beds. Located across the street from the hotel’s main complex, are deluxe rooms situated right next to two of the hotels private beach coves. The rooms also have either a king or two double beds and include a lanai with outdoor furniture.

The hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool, but why use it, when the entire island is filled with beautiful beaches. There is also a tennis court, BBQ facilities, and an activities desk to help assist with any reservations. They offer a complimentary newspaper in the lobby as well as any toiletries that you happen to run out of or forget. There are spa services on site as well as baby sitting services if you happen to be traveling with children. The best thing about this hotel is free parking where most of the other resorts charge a small fortune to park.

All of the rooms are non-smoking and include air conditioning, private bath, cable television, and an in-room safe. There is in room internet access, coffee maker, hair dryer and ironing board. The rooms are 364 square feet and very spacious with a Polynesian atmosphere.

My memorable experience at the hotel was assisted from the farmer’s market located up the street. We picked up a pineapple, passion fruit, mango, and papaya and took it back to the hotel. We sat outside on the lanai and watched the sun set while eating fruits that we had never tried before and wasn’t really sure on how to eat them. While we enjoyed eating the fruits and relaxing in the cool breeze, that breeze soon became a strong trade wind which is common in Hawaii. The tall palm trees were swaying back and forth while the sky in the background had turned a purplish hue as the sun was setting. The pictures that we took at that exact moment were some of the best that we took on the entire trip.

You will be hard pressed to find a hotel with oceanfront views located near plenty of beaches and in close proximity to such attractions as Mount Haleakala all for a budget price.

This hotel way exceeded our expectations. We paid for the Ocean front room and it was so worth it. Our hotel room was a 30-second walk to the ocean. The Maui Lu was affordable, quiet, comfortable, and the staff were so nice to us. The front desk were always happy to help us with directions to great places to visit and explore.
Our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable and there were plenty of pillows. We had a 2-story condo like suite. The downstairs was a sitting area and bathroom, while the upstairs was a small loft with a bed and dresser. (If you are a very tall person , 6' or taller, I wouldn't recommend this room... but I am 5'2'' so I had plenty of head room.) My favorite part was that the bed was positioned to face the window upstairs so when you wake up and sit up in bed you are greeted with nothing but water.
I would prefer this hotel to the big resorts because of the homey feel.

The Aston Maui Lu is a nice budget hotel. It's located in Kihei where it tends to be less expensive than places on the island such as Ka'anapali. The hotel is divided into two sections. There is oceanfront and oceanview. The oceanfront rooms are located on the beach across from the street from the main hotel. The oceanview rooms look like old apartments to me. They do not keep the outside of the oceanview rooms up as well as they do the oceanfront. Stay on the oceanfront side and you will be very satisfied. Our rooms had a mini-fridge and coffemaker. They give you enough coffee for one night, so buy some of your own to avoid the pricey hotel coffee charges.

Our room was on the ground floor and had a sliding glass door that practically opened up on the beach. Unfortunately, I would not recommend swimming at the hotel beach because of the danger of undertow. Our friends that were traveling with us had a room on the second floor of the oceanfront rooms. Their room had a sliding glass door that opened to a small patio. The hotel has a swimming pool and two tennis courts on the oceanview side. There is an activity desk at the front desk to book tours and events. The hotel is about 10 miles from the airport and has a grocery store nearby to pick up any items you may have forgotten. The staff was very friendly at check in. We did not see many staffmembers on the oceanfront side except for the housekeepers.

Not the greatest, for the price we paid we could have got something better. For a RESORT it is below standard. Seems like upgrading and maintenance are not done.
