Camino Real

Camino Real

There are many great hotels along the Hotel Zone of Cancun. I have stayed at a few of them but the Camino Real is my favorite. The hotel is about 15 miles from the airport and sits on the northern tip of the island. It is bordered on three sides by water-the main beach on the inland side is the choice of most visitors. You can rent snorkel gear or kayaks, lay in the sun under a swaying palm tree or walk the beach. The beach on the ocean side of the hotel is smaller but has more solitude-a great place to view the morning sun coming up over the water. The back of the Camino Real has no beach but a nice walking trail where you can watch the waves. The pool has a swim up bar and not only can you get a great meal without leaving your beach chair but the entertainment is fun. Music? A fashion show? Games in the pool?

The rooms are more than comfortable. They are clean and have balconies looking out over the ocean. They also have a safe to store your valuables while out. Hertz has a car rental agency in the hotel which makes it easy to make arrangements to drive to destinations outside of Cancun, and the hotel is within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and nightlife.

Camino Real Cancun has pluses and minuses going for it. A huge plus is the location. Right on Punta Cancun (the very tip of the hotel zone), it sits between the open ocean and the calmer bay. It is ideally situated for your choice of beaches (it has 3 beaches of its own), and is in a great location for it''s proximity to shopping, restaurants, and clubs. It is within walking distance to Plaza Caracol and Forums by the Sea, and just a short bus ride to downtown Cancun. What I feel is the best beach in Cancun (for those who prefer the calmer waters for swimming or snorkeling), Playa Caracol, is just a 5 minute walk.

Our room had a disgusting bathroom (I did not want to trade rooms since we had received an upgrade to an ocean view corner room). It was cleaned by the maid but had a severe mildew problem and was obviously in need of remodeling. I have heard others complain of the same problem, which appears to only be an issue in the original building, not the newer tower rooms. Our large room had a king sized bed which had fresh, crisp linens daily, dining table and chairs, a futon/couch area, and a large balcony with ocean view. We also had a bay view from smaller windows in the room and bathroom. Satelite tv and air condition are standard in all rooms. Room service has a large and varied menu and seemed reasonably priced (as far as room service goes).

My opinion is this: if you get a good deal stay here, don''t stay if you have to pay rack rate. If you have a couple months before you go, sign up for the Camino Real''s frequent guest membership. Even if you never stay with them again, the card entitles you to a complimentary room upgrade if available.
