Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground

Best Things Nearby:
It's inside Walt Disney World.

Best Things About the Resort:
Very clean, nice facilities, attractive surroundings, and excellent campground amenities

Resort Experience:
This is still a wonderful campground for RVers (and tenters)! It is very intelligently designed. It offers roomy, wooded sites, and Mickey keeps the bugs out. There are very clean comfort stations and lots going on at this resort. People are having fun here! If you are not a camper, ask your travel agent about the Wilderness Cabins. They are a good value for larger families (they sleep six) and well designed. There is nothing makeshift about them. There is a nice large and modern kitchen, living area, and bath.

Best Things Nearby:
Walt Disney World--park your car and use Disney's transportation to anywhere you want to go.

Best Things About the Resort:
It costs less than most of the resorts at Disney, yet you still get all the perks from staying on-site. The bath houses were clean, and the staff is super friendly.

Resort Experience:
This campground offers all the amenities I've ever seen in a campground--except for those with outstanding views, of course. We tent-camp, so for those with RVs, check on what they offer. I have no idea and am not checking anything off--my guess is they have it all, though.

From the moment you check in, you start feeling that "Disney" magic. We were welcomed at the gate with the words "Welcome home", and for a while, we wished it were our home!

Our kids loved the pool, there was enough space between us and the next campsite to have some privacy (and trees to help), and the bath houses were clean! Boats are available to rent at the marina, so we spent some time enjoying ourselves in Sea Raycers.

Transportation to everywhere Disney is quick and convenient--and not crowded when we were there (February). You can also use the perks of charging everything you eat or buy at the theme parks to your room bill--and having souvenirs delivered to a store at the campground so you can pick it up later and not have to carry it around with you all day.

For those who don't live on farms (as we do), there is a petting farm animal area for the kids, pony rides, and trail rides available, as well as carriage rides.

Every night, a Disney movie is offered, and there is a campfire sing-along. Restaurants are on-site, or you can cook your own--or (our choice) eat at the theme parks.

This campground is quite nice. For Disney, if one has the money for it, we still prefer staying at the deluxe Polynesian Resort, but when one wants to save money and still be on-site, I highly recommend this place.

Ft. Wilderness

These cute cabins are across a lake from Magic Kingdom. You can ride the boat to MK--but we took our car everywhere. You park it in your own drive just outside the cabin door.

This resort has camping, RV rental and cabins decorated in a warm, homey pioneer theme. The large kitchen/dining/living area has a queen size murphy bed (folds into a wall), couch, coffee table and two chairs. The bedroom has bunk beds, a double bed, a closet, a bedside table and two dressers. All that furniture is kind of squeezed into the bedroom area; so, our family hung out in the living area. The bathroom has a good size tub/shower and ample counter space.

Ft. Wilderness decor isn't as heavily Disney as some of the other resorts. My overall impression here is of peace and quiet. The dense, tall pines and leaf carpeted ground seem to muffle any noise.

There are fun activities here for kids--campfire shows with characters Chip & Dale, marshmallow roasting, trail rides, etc. The famous Hoop de Doo Review is here, too; but, since we only had four full days, we didn't do much in the resort itself. Since it's relatively economical to stay at Ft. Wilderness, many families come to Disney World for long trips and spend "down time" relaxing around the resort.

The resort is huge with its own bus system. You can also rent bikes or a golf cart. The golf cart costs $40 and I couldn't see spending as much per day for a golf cart as I'd paid for the rental car. There is a nice camp store that's surprisingly reasonably priced. We rode the shuttle bus to it because you can't park your car near the store. Once, when I had no time to wait for the shuttle bus, my sister-in-law drove me to the store and circled around a few times in the car. When I'd made my purchases, I called her on the cell phone and she met me in front with our car. By the way, we saved a ton by eating breakfast and supper in the cabin.

Speaking of money, let me talk a bit about the pricing. We arrived New Year's Eve and the rate on that night was very high--I think about $300. If you call Walt Disney World reservations and tell them your arrival date, they will automatically price your entire stay at the rate that is in effect that first night--even if the rate for the next four nights is much lower. I found out that the rate for 1-1-03 would be about $170 and the rate for the rest of the nights in our stay were only about $140. When I asked the Disney reservationist about this he told me that he could book three separate reservations for us so that we could get the three different rates--but they won't volunteer to do this.

A delightful full service campground with accommadations for group tenting to full hookup with cable TV. Sites are spacious, clean, and have large restrooms with laundry. Internal bus transportation is convenient and frequent. Two camp stores, a large waterfront area, restaurant and lounge, swimming pool, recreation area, petting zoo, and hiking trails. Boat and bus transportation to theme parks and other resort areas. Fees vary by location, ammenities, and calendar, and can be less than $50, but I had to pick something! Great for large families.
