Best Things Nearby:
There are two categories of best things nearby. I’ll call them practical and tourist. In the practical area, there is a Big K-Mart about two miles from the entrance to Governors Green. It’s close, but does not intrude on the quiet of the resort. There are numerous restaurants: Cracker Barrel, Uno Pizza, Golden Corral, a Marino’s, a nice Italian restaurant, several great seafood places and so on. There is also a late night grocery store about three miles away.
On the tourist side, you are maybe 10 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg, 15 minutes from Jamestown, and maybe 20 minutes from Yorktown. It’s about 40 minutes into Norfolk where you find the Naval Yards, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel, the Air and Space Museum, and the Battleship Wisconsin. About 50 minutes away, you'll find Virginia Beach and places like the Aquarium or Edgar Cayce Institute. For the softer side and within 8 miles of the resort, there is a candy factory, candle factory, pottery factory, wood furniture factory, and many antique malls. We were there 10 days and didn’t see everything we would have liked to have seen.
Best Things About the Resort:
We own with Fairfield, so we are used to wonderful condos everywhere we go, but I have to say walking into Governors Green makes you think you must have more money than you do!! The rooms are light and airy favoring soft olives, goldenrod, and rose color schemes. All the furniture is named designer quality (featuring Ethan Allen among others) and extremely comfortable. With the opening of Governors Green, there is a new category of units -- a four-bedroom. There are two master bedrooms both with king-size beds, jacuzzis, and another large bedroom with a king bed. The fourth bedroom is called the nanny's bedroom and it has two double beds. A large flat screen TV is the center piece of an entire wall entertainment center. There is a columned entry way and a full laundry room. There are three full baths and lots of closet space. Luxury doesn’t seem a rich enough word to describe this unit. The kitchen had everything you could need including microwave and garbage disposal. All the major appliances have cabinet faces to match all the cabinets. (see picture). There is a nice breakfast bar area and in the dining room is a table with high backed chairs for 8! The condos are all located in large buildings with elevators. There are also luggage carts to help with loading and unloading. The landscaping was well done, but just taking hold as the resort is very, very new.
The amenities are also great. There is a large outdoor pool and hot tub, an indoor pool and hot tub. There is a small internet cafe, an adults only room, a playroom for small children, a rec room with pool and ping pong, an exercise room and more coming as the resort continues to be built. There is also mini-golf, arcade game room, video rental , adults only room with pool table, and an activities office at Kingsgate that serves all the Fairfield resorts in the area. Fairfield itself does tours into Washington and runs daily activities for children. We did neither while we were there because we have no children, and the sniper was picking off folks in Washington at the time! But we did take advantage of their offers of discounted tickets to many local attractions.
Resort Experience:
I must admit to enjoying everything about this resort. Even when we were referred to the "gentleman at the door" for our parking pass (which I knew was the opportunity the resort was taking to talk to us about more timeshare), we had a good time. I always say yes to the timeshare walkthrough. We love Fairfield and they are buying up a lot of new properties. This is a chance to find out how many cool new places we can go to even if we’re not buying!
Now to talk a bit more about the unit. The couch was comfortable, and the chairs were comfortable. The beds were comfortable and the lighting was great. There is even a dimmer switch on the lighting in the dining room. The air conditioning worked great and everyone on the staff was helpful and smiling. There were five TVs -- a large one in the living room, and one in each bedroom. Even a large family could avoid arguments over what to watch! I understand that these really large units will cost about 300,000 points a week so we’ll all have to get to know other Fairfield owners here on RCI Community so we can pool our points to stay in the signature
four-bedroom units.
We didn’t actually stay at Governors Green although there were units being rented out the week we were there. We toured the four-bedroom, two-bedroom, and one-bedroom deluxe units and were impressed with all. I decided to write this entry because I had some great pictures of the resort and also, there are no reviews done on Governors Green yet. It really deserves to be on your list as a place to stay. Please see the pictures below to get a better idea what’s there.
I really can’t find anything negative about this resort. It is ideally located for attraction in the area, has a great staff and the units are big, well appointed and comfortable. Very highly recommended!
