Description: The Wyndham in a lovely resort on quiet Cable Beach that has plenty of activities for everyone. I booked this hotel through a website online as a package, and I was very satisfied. Since the resort has been undergoing renovations (and still was as of December 2009) I got a great deal. There are 5 towers of hotel rooms, with one closed as of my visit. The rooms are of varying sizes--my partner and I requested a king sized oceanview room, and were placed in one with 2 double beds. It had a beautiful view, but was rather small, and alas we wanted a king room. When we called the front desk, we were told we would have to wait a day, get a room without a view, or...be upgraded to a corner suite. Guess which option we chose?
The suite was absolutely amazing, bigger than my NYC apartment. It had a large living room with balcony (which had a table and chairs and a lounge chair) and a separate bedroom with windows on 2 sides overlooking the pool and ocean. Both rooms had flat screen TVs. There was a small changing area with 2 sinks, and a bathroom with a jacuzzi tub (all rooms have this feature).
As for the hotel itself, everything is bright and clean and newly renovated. When I was there, the exercise room was under construction, so it was temporarily located in a storefront in a corridor, with minimal equipment. The lobby has 4 computers with internet access, and there was a line any hour of the day or night. The pool complex is great, with a twisting waterslide at one end and a pool bar at the other. There is an outdoor hot tub, and also a pool table. Just past the pool is the beach, with a quiet lagoon area as well. On the beach, non-hotel-affiliated vendors sell drinks in coconuts as well as offer rides on jetskis and parasails. Adjacent to the pool/beach is a daquiri hut and a grill restaurant.
Inside the the hotel, there is of course the casino, with many slot machines. Tables have high minimums $15/$25 for blackjack) but there are electronic interactive blackjack tables for $2 and $4 as well. The casino is NOT open 24 hours, but instead opens around noon. Upstairs and overlooking the casino is a nightclub with live music on weekends and a nice-sized dancefloor.
As for dining, the options are all rather expensive. I'm used to paying a lot (I live in NYC) but this was actually higher than I expected. My vacation package included a $150 food voucher, and this was gone in 2 meals! There is a very good Asian restaurant, and an overpriced steakhouse, a $30 buffet (with not many options), a Starbucks and cafe, and the outdoor grill. The hotel is also connected to the Sheraton through the casino, and there are other restaurants there, such as an Italian place. Drinks are also expensive, but if you sit at a penny slot machine, attendants will bring you free drinks, so there's no need to pay for alcohol at this hotel!
The location of the hotel is very good. It is off of the main road, accessible by public bus (colectivo--white van that is very cheap) which goes everywhere you'd want to go.
I was in the Bahamas during a rare cold spell, so I had to wrap myself in towels to sit by the beach. A night or two it also rained, so if you are traveling with kids, be sure to bring activities just in case.
