We booked and prepaid through the travel website for our last night through Rome on our way back from a week in Sorrento. The hotel had no record of our reservation and claimed they were completely booked. I showed them my travel website reservation, and the front desk agent said that they had obviously lost the reservation and would arrange to put us up in a different hotel a few blocks away (Hotel Genova). I was suspicious when he noted that we "had only booked for one night", as if to say that this should not be considered a problem. I can't help but be suspicious that our "one night" was not going to be as profitable for them, so they bumped us. The Hotel Genova is fairly stark with an extraordinarily impersonal staff. It's located on Via Cavour, which is one of the major throroughfares through Rome. There was lots of traffic noise most of the night (one of the things we were trying to avoid by staying at the Mecante). I've rated the Mecante as "terrible" only because we were turned away after having paid for the pleasure of staying there.

Excellent location, convenient to Metro and Termini train station, and hop-on hop-off buses. Walkable to some tourist sights. Rooms were large by European standards, and kept very clean. Towel warming bars were appreciated. Large grocery story very near. Good continental breakfast served every day, with hot items available to purchase. Tried the restaurant for dinner one rainy evening, and it was ok, but not great. Super staff, reliable elevator. Great rooftop terrace.

My wife and I had a most pleasurable experience in the Mecante. Large clean room and king size bed and huge bathroom with jacuzzi. Room included a refrig. and a safe for valuables. Two mornings we had to leave early for local tours, and they brought breakfast to the room at no extra charge. The courteous staff arranged the tours and when the tour company overcharged us, the Mecenate clerk got right on it, and we were reimbursed the next morning, no questions asked! The hotel is centrally located and in easy walking distance from the Termini train station, so you don't have to pay expensive cab fare from/to the airport. We walked from our hotel to all the main sites (except the Vatican), but public transportation is easily accessible. We highly recommend this hotel. Finally, we got a superb price on the flight/hotel package through Travel website.

My husband and I took advantage of the pick-up service at the airport. For $55 euro it was comperable to a cab ride with luggage and driver tip. The driver met us at the gate and got us to the hotel in no time. The hotel is 3 blocks from the train station - important to us since we took the train for an overnight trip to Florence. You can also catch a bus or metro from that location. We walked everywhere! We love to walk anyway but I did not get tired of walking. There was just so much to see. The hotel arranged our tour of the Vatican museum and when they realized that the bus would pick us up an hour earlier than expected, they sent us breakfast boxes to take with us. The staff was so nice from the desk clerks to the bartenders. We had wine and an appetizer at the cafe on the corner around rush hour and it was like Demolition Derby. So entertaining - not to mention watching the cars pull in, drink a cup at the coffee bar, and drive out again. For close dining, you may want to try Alfredo's two blocks up from the hotel. They were so nice and the Italian food was good but I would ask for the Moracan recipes that don't appear on the menu- tasty!

We visited Rome over the weekend of Easter, and this hotel was a great choice. The hotel is charming, the room was clean, the staff was very helpful, the location was great. I read lots of reviews for this hotel, and if you throw out the FEW "extreme" ratings, this hotel lived up to them all. The neighborhood looked a bit rough, with graffiti, but I always felt safe. The graffiti was everywhere anyway. The local shops and restaurants were great. I didn't have a bad meal. Two blocks from the metro, and three blocks from the train station "termini."
