Good but not Great

I stayed at the Mugal Sheraton in October, early in the tourist season. I paid about * for my room for one night, as much as I paid for a week anywhere else! Obviously I had high expectations. The good: --my room was nicely appointed and comfortable; --I left early in the day, and received a lovely boxed breakfast since the restaurants were not yet open; --the grounds and pool are great and relaxing; very quiet, which in Agra is especially appreciated. --front desk staff were lovely. --the Indian restaurant had some of the best kebabs and dal that I've had in India. The bad: --the consierge desk was very, very pushy. I'm pretty good at saying "no" but they really pushed trips to their relatives' shoe store, for example. Annoying in a 5-star hotel. --to actually SEE the Taj from the hotel, you have to go up on the roof and look through a telescope. Admittedly, I was in an "inexpensive" room so it didn't face the Taj, but the hotel was far enough away that it would have been a minor view and not worth the extra $100 in my opinion. --the business services are phenomenally expensive; three to four times what was true in other places. Save your emailing for somewhere else. Even the staff in the room tried to talk me out of using it! --there are a lot of travel groups that seem to use this hotel. Hard for single travelers to meet anyone. I'm not really a 5-star traveler in India; I prefer to actually meet people rather than stay in hotels that could be anywhere in the world. That said, if your preference is service and shine, it's a nice hotel, and certainly not as expensive as some in Agra.

Beautiful hotel with spacious lobby, excellent American-type rooms and 3 different restaurants. Service is courteous and the grounds very well kept with pools, fountains and plants with flowers matching the romanticism of this city. Be careful with all the taxis and rickshaws waiting outside the hotels and near the tourists attractions.
