Xanadu Beach Resort and Marina

Best Things Nearby:
Pier One Restaurant was very interesting with shark feedings every evening at 7, 8, and 9pm. Time it right and see two feedings. Salvador's Italian restaurant was also excellent.

Best Things About the Resort:
The rooms were beautiful and spacious.

Resort Experience:
We went in the off-season and there were only about 20 people staying in the entire resort. The RCI and Xanadu Vacation Club staff was very helpful, but the rest of the staff seemed annoyed when we came to them with any questions or problems. The beach was nice but should have been raked more frequently. Food and drink bar on the beach. Wish they wouldn't let the locals sell their goods on the beach.

The retreat is your basic bamboo bungalow, back packer scene. The owner, Mr. "Q" speaks reasonably good English, is very helpful, and trained in China for years studying medicinal herbs. Your own bamboo bungalow with a private balcony, hammock, mosquito-netted bed is 150-200 baht per night depending which room. That''s US $3 to $5 at the time of writing. There is an excellent view of the mountains, river, and town, but is close enough to be walking distance. About 1 1/2 km to the center of town. There is also a waterfall on the property that will lull you to sleep at night. The down side, rooms closer to the road get a little traffic noise in the day, but at night there is almost no traffic, and it''s not a pronlem. Also, there is no hot water, no A/C, and at the time of writing, no fans, but he assured me that they were coming, and the place was brand new. We were actually his first guests. Mr. "Q" is also the man to see to plan your own treks and bamboo raft rides.

$10 a night, clean enough rooms (some with private bath). Two blocks away from the bus terminals, and walking distance from downtown Liberia. YHA affiliated.
