Visit to an Old Lady that’s Still Trying to Impress

......and fails at most of it.

Some people may claim that a hotel is all about location, location. Well the location of the Arabella Sheraton Neues Schloss is definitely it’s greatest asset. This once charming hotel has missed the opportunity to turn itself into a boutique hotel – and to my estimate it could have done it with just a few simple steps.

First of all I want to acknowledge that the staff probably tries their best to make up for the hotels shortcomings. But as like as at many other places – they only can do so much.

Located a few steps from the Lake Zurich and accessible easy from the airport by way of the efficient way of the Swiss Railway system and the local street car, the hotel can be reached in less than 30 minutes from the Zurich airport. (Any taxi ride – though more comfortable if you have a lot of luggage will take longer).

The hotel is within walking distance of most the Zurich sightseeing and shopping destinations.

Although the hotel does not provide a health club, the nearby park along the lake makes up for a nice workout if you are into jogging.

There is one single elevator in the building – but very small and very slow and unfortunately does not start at the street level. Luggage needs to be carried a few flights up or the help of a bell captain is advised.

After a long ride up the five floors or wherever your room might be, you finally reach the room. The room as a well appointed look at first sight, but soon you realize that there are just too many drapes, carpets and sofas, chairs covered with fabrics to make even the healthiest among us (and I am not talking about people who already have an allergy) to run for the window and grab some air. That leads me to the balconies. They are surprisingly well appointed and offer a wonderful view, especially on the higher floors.

At some point you might want to try out the bed but soon you realize that you may just have lied down on a plank of wood rather than some mattress.

Now this could be true anywhere and everywhere in hotels of a certain standard. But this hotel rates itself and so does the local hotel guide as a five star accommodation.

And that’s where most of my remarks come to a conclusion.

Sometimes less is more and in the city of Zurich many hotel might just have more of everything over this 5star hotel but less of price tag and much less of a level of expectation.

A few years ago I have tried their Le Jardin restaurant, where breakfast is also served. The food as well as the service were excellent. But then again, one might argue that you could stay elsewhere and still have dinner here or at any of the very many great restaurants in Zurich.
