Hilton Prague

“Not really a typical Prague hotel,” said our taxi driver as he drove us from the airport, a note of contempt in his voice. We'd picked this hotel because it was on special offer, but the fact that the Clintons had stayed there added to the appeal.

On the outside, the hotel was a rather large, bland building, but inside it was better. There was a large central lounge area with plants, tables, and glass elevators running up and down between the floors. There was also a bar and two restaurants. The only meal we took in the hotel was breakfast, a huge buffet selection with everything you could possibly want, a great way to prepare for a day out in the cold.

Our room was pleasant and spacious, with a comfortable sitting area and a powerful shower in the bathroom.

The hotel also had great leisure facilities. We only had time to try the pool, which was a decent size for a hotel pool.

The hotel is in a fairly central location, near the river, but it is somewhat cut off from the main part of the town by a busy dual-carriage way. This wasn't a problem when we left the hotel in the morning, as we were able to take a pleasant stroll along the river, but coming back at night it didn't look so safe to be walking that way, so the other route saw us walking along the edge of the busy road, which wasn't designed for pedestrians.

To get to the hotel from the airport, take bus no. 119 to the last stop, Dejvicka, on the green line (line A), and then take the metro to station Florence. Exit the station, cross tram tracks, follow the street to the bridge, don’t cross the road, turn right, and keep going until you see the Hilton (about 3 minutes away).

The hotel is a modern building of blue glass, and it takes up a whole city block. There is, both above ground and underground, parking that costs 50Kc per hour or 750Kc for 24 hours. The hotel is very large; it has eight floors and is built as a square with an atrium. Two elevators have glass sides, and you can enjoy the view as you are going up. In the lobby there are several shops that sell jewelry and crystal ware. There are several small fountains with flower beds on top and a restaurant with a beautiful carpet. On the fourth floor, there is a modern art piece that looks like a ball made of needles. Balconies facing the atrium have tropical plants on them.

The room I was given had one king-size bed and a sofa that would pull out into a full-size sleeper. There was also a desk with a chair, a coffee table, two nightstands, several paintings on the walls, and a large wardrobe with a full-size mirror. A teakettle and iron were in the room. The bathroom was a decent size with a sink and a bathtub. The toilet was separate, with its own door. Furniture was of cherry color and had a birds-eye design.

I bought a phone card at the airport. It comes with a smart chip, of which the smallest denomination is 200Kc; each minute to US costs about 6 to 9Kc. You can use those in the phones in the Hilton lobby. The hotel has a sauna, which is complementary, and a gym, which you have to pay for. The executive lounge is on the eighth floor.
