Not as expected

I had very high expectations - and it was because it was my first trip that was all inclusive to a Caribbean island. The bed was springy and difficult to sleep on. The doors were so thin you could hear every conversation in the hallway and my door had a BIG crack in it that if you stood up against it you could look inside. The rooms were just "OK" - not exactly the lap of luxury I imagined. Our mini bar was partially used and we had to request that it be cleaned and refilled. Our flight was late so I called the night before and told them to expect us the next day. I was reassured that they would, but when we showed up they had lost our reservation and didn't have a room for us. So it took about an hour for them to remedy this (this was after we traveled all day and it was in the middle of the dinner hour). The buffet was good and I would eat that most of the time if I did return; the Japanese restaurant was good, but DO NOT go to the steak house. It was a joke. The food was carelessly prepared and the steak was tough. I had better at Ponderosa. We went into the casino and immediately got a cigar stuck in my husband's mouth without his asking and then were prompted to pay for it. The last day was marred by a disagreement with the Concierge who attempted to double bill us for phone calls that we had already paid for... and the Staff member kept raising her voice and causing a scene. We eventually resolved it to our satisfaction; but it really put an extra sour note on our last day.

We has a great time, would stay again actually planning my next trip. The staff is always asking want they can get you very attentive. the hotel is clean and there and beautiful. The food was excellent and pleantiful we ate way too much and the drinks never stopped. The only problem is the elevator gets stuck take the stairs. The night time entertainment is weak but ok considering. I would recommend it.

This is our second time at a Riu last year it was Jamica. My husband and I meet two other couples each year for a vacation. We all like to do different things so this place was perfect for all. Just sit on the beach or by the large pool, take a dip ,go shopping or walk the beautiful beach. You can use the sailboats and any of the other sporting equipment thet have.
The people there go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied, very friendly . On the first day we arrived we were dissasfied with our room we made it known at the front desk and the next day we were in a much nicer room. Very clean rooms.
We went to the casino and the girls played roulette every night. No problem there just don't use a credit card .
The food was good just bring a few pairs of long pants for the men you need them at the buffett.

We stayed here in March to attend a family member's wedding and, though we didn't pick the destination or hotel, we really loved the Macao. The rooms are large, well-maintained, secure, and everything worked. The restaurants are all good, though gourmets may have some complaints, there was plenty to choose from, especially at the buffet, and the Caribe Grill is worth a trip just for the view.
There are plenty of activities to choose from, and if you get bored you can use all of the facilities of the Riu Bambu (which has a nice swim-up bar), Riu Taino, and Riu Naiboa, all of which are walking distance away. The resort is especially nice for an older crowd who want something quiet and laid-back.
We did go to the casino one night, and it does have kind of a "shady" feel, but don't forget...you AREN'T in the US, where there are regulations and agencies to make sure people don't get ripped off. Confine your gaming to the slot machines, and don't bet more than you can afford, or better yet, avoid the casino entirely. (You wouldn't be missing much!)
The best reason to book the Macao is the BEACH, which is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! Perfect white sand, beautiful blue water, a nice beach bar, and a waiter who brings drinks right to your chair. You can't ask for more!
