Lies, lies - all over...

During the high season most of the hotels in St/ Petersburg are very expensive - Ibis seemed like a right solution for my wallet. All I need is basically a room with AC and Internet connection. I called the hotel, they confirmed that they have both so I checked in on 4/23/08. 1. There is no real AC in the rooms - the fans are pumping hot air despite 66F outside. The explanation - their system is still in winter mode. So basically what it means - it is not you but the hotel tells you what temperature will be in your room. So much about the AC... the windows are opening only to make a 1" slot so I had to ask engineering to open up the window - however the air is no good and it's noisy, the property is close to one of the major traffic arteries in the city. 2. Internet access - the promised Wi-Fi didn't work in my room. Nor in another room. Nor in the thrid room - it simply is not there! It only works in the lobby but even there I was not able to connect to my office using VPN 3. The very first time I took the shower I found a huge spill on the bathroom floor - in a brand new hotel which opened just a couple of weeks ago! 4. This hotel is totally mis-managed, no one knows what's going on, no one responds to complaints, no one seem to care. I had to complain 3 times before the shower was fixed, however neither the AC nor Internet were not and I had to move out...

The Regent Palace is in the perfect location. Piccadilly Circus is a thriving area, and the hotel does a favorable job giving local information and directions when needed. The room was clean and there was no street noise or commotion from neighbors. Would recommend the Titanic Restaurant.

Regent Palace

Regent Palace is centrally located next to the Underground Piccadilly Circus station. It was very humid inside without any air-conditioning. There's a window that opens up, but it doesn't stay open without something holding it open, so it didn't help because there was no breeze.

Toilets are shared and located next to the shower facilities. To use the shared shower facility, you call on the phone and wait for housekeeping to knock on your door, provide you with a bath towel, and then escort you down the long hallway to unlock an unused shower. We waited what seemed like 20 to 30 minutes and called again before someone showed up. We tried to circumvent this afterwards by saving our towels and looking for an unused shower that wasn't locked.

We were feeling all sweaty just before the shower and still sweaty right after the shower. Having a private shower in room is optional for an extra cost, but all those rooms were booked when we checked in. Our room was older, dingy, and in need of a new paint job, with a sink instead of a shower in the room.

There's a hotel safe in the lobby, but losing the safe key will cost you dearly, plus they'll have to call a locksmith to drill a hole in the safe to get your contents out (something you don't want to do if you need to depart soon).

The elevators were slow, so we opted to use the stairs. There's a concierge, Nescafé, and Marco Pierre White's famous Titanic restaurant, lounge bar, and gift shop. Allow yourself half an hour for the check-out process, as there was quite a queue. Outside the hotel the immediate area was very congested with people day and night. It's not a location/area I would recommend to stay in, although it's easy to get back to on the night bus when you're out late.
