Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta

The rooms were large, but kitchen facilities were limited.

The grounds were absolutely beautiful. Poinsettias were spread throughout the facility, giving it a wonderful holiday feel. The spa is outstanding and fairly priced. Some buildings are currently under construction and the push for the sales presentation can be overbearing. The service is wonderful and the pool is fantastic.

On-site dining is OK, but better prices can be found in town. The old town of Puerto Vallarta is 15 minutes away, but it’s easy to get there by bus or cab.

Best Things Nearby:
Whale watching tours on Banderas Bay are best between December and March. This resort, with its own beautiful beach, also boasts the second largest swimming pool in Latin America.

Best Things About the Resort:
If you're the type to just stay at a resort, relax, and get pampered, this is a wonderful place to do it. Try kayaking on the inner lagoon, or be transported around the property on the miniature train or in one of the piloted electric boats.

Resort Experience:
It took about 20 minutes to travel from the airport to the resort. As we entered the property, we saw the beautiful lush, colorful landscaping, which was a pleasant surprise considering we were arriving for Christmas week. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful in locating a very spacious, one bedroom, non smoking unit, with a king sized bed and a great view facing the bay and overlooking the lagoon and swimming pool. What more could a person want?

If you're thinking good food, they have two restaurants and a poolside snack bar on site. If you prefer to fix some of your own meals, you can get all the ingredients, as well as various vacation necessities at a small store located near the entrance to the property. As for the pool, it is the second largest in Latin America. The resort has its own beautiful, private (no venders) white sand beach. The resort staff will transport you around the grounds on a miniature railroad train or around their private lagoon in comfortable, shaded electric boats. You can spend time and exercise in the gym, or relax and be pampered at Kaana Spa with its' steam room, sauna, complete workout room and Jacuzzi.

Enjoy a romantic evening on the patio lounge overlooking the lagoon and listening to the live musical performances. You could enjoy a wonderful vacation without ever leaving the resort, but you'd miss seeing some of the best sights and pleasures Mexico has to offer.

Best Things Nearby:
The resort is right on a secluded beach.

Best Things About the Resort:
The resort is gorgeous.

Resort Experience:
This is one place to invest your money and own. This is one of the best resorts I have ever seen. The pool is the second largest in Latin America. It is just breathtaking. The service was great. You are only about 15-20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. You can take the bus (which is very cheap) or take a cab. It is very easy not to go anywhere when you are at this resort. Make sure you do some of the tours.

Best Things Nearby:
Puerto Vallarta is only 20 min. by cab. There you will find shopping, boat tours, horseback riding in the forest or on the beach, and plenty of restaurants and bars.

Best Things About the Resort:
Self-contained with several restaurants, activities for adults and children, beautiful pool, beach, spa and gym, walking trails, golf course, and a mini-mart.

Resort Experience:
The resort is continuing to add new rooms and restaurants so there is construction in progress. This should not detract from the beauty of the resort as it is on the perimeter of the property; however, you should always make sure your children stay clear of any construction sites, as the Mexican rules and regulations relating to safety are not similar to those in the U.S.

The staff was excellent and the property is beautiful. There is a building of rooms that faces the front parking lot. This is where we were originally assigned -- if you get this area, ask the front desk to move you to the building closest to the pool and beach. If there's anything available, you will get it -- be persistent and go down to the reception desk in person, nothing will be done by a phone request.

The mosquitos are vicious at night, so be sure to apply lime juice (yes, you read that correctly) to any exposed skin -- it truly works and was taught to me by our guide during a horseback tour through the Puerto Vallarta forest.

I wouldn't recommend this resort if you're looking for nightlife or Mexican culture. It's a perfect place for families and couples who would like to be left alone.

The food was decent, not spectacular, and overall, the prices were reasonable.

Best Things Nearby:
Not much is nearby. It is about a 20 minute drive from Puerto Vallarta.

Best Things About the Resort:
The grounds are very nice here. The spa is great and reasonably priced (a three massage package for about US$140). The massages didn't all need to be used by the same person either and once you booked a package, you could use the spa facilities for the week.

Resort Experience:
We traded our one-bedroom unit at Lawrence Welk Escondido and got a two-bedroom here at the Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta. So we invited friends to join us. We also had arranged to meet with six other friends from various parts of the country. Our unit was very spacious with plenty of room for the four of us. The two bedrooms are separated by the kitchen/living room. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and there is an extra sink just outside the master suite area.

The grounds are very nice. It is very spread out and I would be very disappointed if I had been assigned a room in the main building as it is quite a hike from there to the pool or beach. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They pester you a bit about buying tickets to the weekly fiestas, but it is Mexico and that's how it works here. We told them at check-in that we were not interested in a timeshare presentation and we were never called or asked again. Each time we needed something, it was quickly delivered to our room. We were pleasantly surprised by this, as it is not usually the case.

At check-out, we had requested a bellman and 5 minutes later he called to say it would be about 10 minutes as he was picking up our bill from registration; he arrived as expected. WOW!
