Best Things Nearby:
It is great that it is 15 miles from Puerto Vallarta.

Best Things About the Resort:
It is quiet and away from the noise and congestion of the city. You could stay at the resort and never have to leave. They have theme nights for dining, with different cuisines. We enjoyed Sushi Night on Wednesday - it was great.

Resort Experience:
The resort is beautiful. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Maids cleaned every day and made up our bed. We tried to leave a tip a couple of times, but they would only take it in an envelope that they left for us the night before departure.

The beach area is kept clean and has very few vendors. Actually, there are not as many vendors as we like to see. But we like that part of the Mexico experience. Some people don't. There are plenty of vendors in downtown Puerto Vallarta to make up for it.

There were quite a lot of families staying at the resort for the Thanksgiving holiday. The resort said that there was no lifeguard on duty, but we saw a couple of young men under a palapa near the shore watching kids in the surf all day. That was comforting. If you eat at the resort’s restaurants and charge your meals and drinks to your room, you will receive a 15% discount off your meals. Be prepared to pay a price for those drinks, though. All in all, it was a great resort to stay at.

Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta

Mayan Palace: We had a one-bedroom suite. The rooms were just fine. We’ve stayed at a Hotel in Cancun where the air conditioner barely moved the air. The air conditioning at the Mayan Palace works very well. They have extra blankets if needed. And extra pillows were in the living room entertainment center. It was nice to have a separate vanity sink of my own in addition to the one that my wife used in the bathroom. Six towels were available every day but they were not soft. The bed was firmer than ours but it’s good for the back and we slept well. The couches in the living area were rock solid. I don’t think I could have napped on them. I recommended to them to have a VCR or DVD player at the TVs. Then they could rent out movies for $1 a night and make additional income.

Another thing lacking in the room is any kind of clock. The kitchen was adequate, though it is time for them to update their microwave ovens. The freezer in the small fridge ‘will’ make ice cubes. We went to Wal-Mart the first night and bought groceries. The only thing we didn’t consume was the bag of sugar for coffee and the stack of coffee filters. We left those items in the top shelf in hopes that the next guest would use them. While walking the grounds, look to the roof of the most southern building with the lobby. On the roof you’ll see the Presidential Helipad where President Fox lands and stays in the Presidential Suite. It is where one of his daughters got married.

Best Things About the Resort:

Resort Experience:
Activities
Pool: The pool is super large as they state. If you’re thirsty early, bring your own drink. The Balche snack bar doesn’t open until 11:00. The activities staff does a good job of getting guests involved. They start off slow with Tai Chi, and then speed it up later with beach volleyball among other contests for children. We got to the pool about noon on Thursday. This must have been the busiest day. We walked around for about ten minutes before we found lounges to use. Though there were lounge chairs down on the beach available to sit in.

Train: There is a little train that circles the grounds once every 30 minutes. It is short now but will be a nice trip once the Grand Mayan gets finished.

Kayaks: There are kayaks to use free for owners, $5 for exchangers. We passed because it was too hot and muggy.

Golf: Mayan Palace Course – I was allowed to pay $50 for a round at the course (This is the normal fee for owners of Grand Mayan) because I attended the TS Pitch. Since I had no clubs, rentals (Cat Eye, better than what I own) were $35. The course was well-groomed and easier to play than the desert courses I hack at. The course requires you to have a caddy ($15). He helped out in knowing the danger spots and reading the greens. They also need an official witness in case you ace their signature hole (#14 par 3 over a pond which the tee box and green have the only beach view) that they said would net you $10,000US. You’ll have to ask about that one if you play.

Best Things Nearby:
Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita, Bucerías, Porfidio Tequilería, a water park.

Best Things About the Resort:
There are so many activities and things on this resort--spa and salon, a variety of restaurants and shops--that you literally don't ever have to leave the grounds. It also has the 2nd largest pool in Latin America, although it's not heated. Water is cold, but can you imagine the heating bills if they did heat it? There's a private beach next to the pool, a train, a boat, and kayaks.

Resort Experience:
It was hard to figure out where I was supposed to park, so I parked valet. At the entrance, water falls down a pillar into a pool with a bird soundtrack. Check in wasn’t fast. We were asked to attend a timeshare presentation. We said we would think about it. We received a one-bedroom unit facing the golf course. The bellboy brought our luggage and Wal-Mart groceries up from the car. The bedroom had a balcony, private entry into the bathroom, queen-sized bed, TV, drawers, and a small table that sat two. The bathroom had a shower/bath, vanity area with sink, and a separate toilet room with its own door. There was another private vanity mirror with sink for another couple in the living room. In the living room were trundle beds. There was a TV, balcony, coffee table, and end table. In the kitchen there was a glass table that sat four. There was a stove-top and microwave oven. The mini-refrigerator didn’t work. It was either fixed or replaced when we returned from our outing.

The huge pool was cold since it wasn’t heated. The pool is next to a private beach. There is a variety of restaurants, spa and salon. You can pick up a calendar of resort activities. A train takes you through some parts of the resort. The boat and kayaks go through waterways, but it would be much nicer if the waterways and train tracks went through more of the resort. Buildings were under construction. The resort is huge and hilly. If you have a disability, you should ask for a golf cart.

Our unit was beautiful, but there was a bloodstain on the sofa. It wouldn’t be a good place for small children, although suitable for adults and families. The picture frames didn’t have glass covering them. Sticky fingers could ruin the art.

There was daily housekeeping and turn-down service. Maids leave Hershey’s Kisses on pillows. We visited the stores at the resort: a wine store serves food and a store sells souvenirs and resort wear. I bought a postcard to send to my parents.

We received daily calls for the timeshare presentation. We said no and the calls ceased. The water filtration system malfunctioned once during our stay. The faucet water was brown. Although it was an annoyance, it wasn’t horrible for us. We drink bottled water in LA, so we never drank the water. I finished brushing my teeth 30 minutes later. We weren’t in a hurry.

The resort is close to Puerto Vallarta and the Malecón, a water park, Porfidio Tequilería, Bucerías, and Punta Mita. You can take a bus, which is inexpensive.

Check-out had a glitch. They charge you for the bottled water in the room. I never opened it. I used one day of valet parking, then parked in the free parking lot from then on. They had charged me for the full week. They removed the charges that I contested without a problem. Service was very good.

Pool was fantastic.

Best Things About the Resort:
The atmosphere was quiet. Not very many kids around. The bus was close by, easy to get into Puerto Vallarta.

Resort Experience:
The rooms are clean and nice. They are maintained well. The halls and elevators are in good order. The towels and linens are clean and new. The kitchen is small, more of a mini kitchen. It was livable.
