Just not our cup of tea

We were disappointed, mostly by the little things that irritate one. Not a pen or pencil in the room. No hotel services guide. One wastepaper basket for almost 600 square feet. Noisy overhead fan. Dehumidifyer in the room was too noisy to run. Sink stopper wouldn't hold water. No USA Today delivered to the room. Broken chair by the desk. No phone book in the room. Charge you for everything...now these prices are USA $...$7/person to use the fitness center, local calls $2/call, international 800 #s $4/call. , $10.50 for three hours of internet in the room...$19 all day. Business center $3.50 for 30 minutes on the internet..$7/hr. $2/copy to print. So, to print off a boarding pass...it could cost you $7.50. We were there Feb 8-11...and a jackhammer ran all day long right beside the southern pool. There is really no beach to speak of. The panoramic view of the Centro and Hotel District is blocked out by a 12-floor time share and another 30-story time share being built. To us, it seemed like a hotel designed for conventions where all the people are on expense accounts. Cannot comment on the food as we ate all our meals at the Marina. It seemed we were a quarter mile to the front desk and another quarter mile to the pool. This is not a hotel to really experience the city and people of PV. While we are adults without children..I think we like the adults only, smaller hotels where they greet you with champaign, cold towels and a back rub. This was our 6th trip to Mexico in five years and we will not come back to this hotel as it doesn't fit us.

This hotel is in the Marina Vallarta location, which has great shopping and restaurants. Porto Bello is the best of the reastaurants in the Marina, with outstanding Italian food reasonably priced. The hotel is 20 minutes via taxi from the downtown area, about 80 pesos (less than $10). Its only a 5 minute cab ride from the airport. The beach is not a great beach, but if you just walk north on the beach you will come to a very nice one. The pools are nice, and the view from the hotel overlooking Banderas Bay is outstanding. We would stay here again if we were to visit in the future.
Not so good

This hotel has beautiful rooms and grounds, but the food is not good and is overpriced. We prepaid for a night and at checkout, the hotel still tried to charge us for the prepaid room. This dispute is on-going. The beach is small and disappointing. Avoid this hotel unless you get a bargain price. Stay someplace else!

Decided on a last minute deal a week before we left and couldn't have been happier. The Westin was a wonderful hotel/resort. It was beautiful and the staff were excellent. I had booked a standard room and with one quick request was upgraded to a room with a spectacular room. However, I really don't know how you'd have a bad view and it seems all the rooms are ocean view. Location was excellent with the Marina and all of it restaurants were very handy. We walked there each evening and had a selection of any type of food you'd want. We golfed at the Marina and the Vista golf courses which were beautiful. Can't say we really ate at the resort because of the offerings else where. But would DEFINITELY recommend this Westin to anyone!
Great stay at the Westin!

My husband and I just returned from a 4-night stay at the Westin. Prior to making our reservations, we researched the many options in the area via the web and travel books. I had read a few not-so-great reviews here and was a bit hesitant about booking the Westin...but we went ahead and banked on the Westin reputation. We could not have been any more pleased with the resort and our accommodations -- this is a beautiful and upscale resort! The room (9th floor) was clean, modern, and well appointed. The bed was fantastic, the bathroom worthy of mention ( a nice tub and a dual-headed glass/tile walk-in shower), and a great balcony that overlooked the pools (with the ocean just beyond the tops of the palm trees). The hotel staff was always friendly and willing to help and serve. The pool area was very clean and inviting, as was the hotel's beach area. As for the timeshare issue, if you travel almost anywhere in Mexico, you will encounter this sales pitch. I can honestly say that a polite "No, thank you" was all that was needed -- we never felt bothered by this. I can't speak to the hotel's restaurants, as the only food we ate on site was poolside (there are so many great local places nearby). One other honorable mention: We did the Rhythms of the Night and Canopy Tours with Vallarta Adventures ~ would recommend both very highly!
