Novotel Cairo Airport

Novotel Cairo Airport

A few blocks away from Cairo's international airport is the Novotel Cairo Airport. This is EgyptAir's hotel of choice when putting passengers in a hotel during long layovers.

The lobby is large and quite modern, with comfortable sofas to sit on, TVs, and lots of people coming and going. The World Arab Games were being played during my brief time there, and the hotel was being used by many national teams...Kuwait, Oman, and Iraq.

The room itself is a tad smaller than the average size, but that should not be a deterrent as it is very comfortable, clean, and has everything you might need. There was one queen/king size bed in the room, along with a small table, TV, coffee maker, and window that overlooked the pool and airport. The bathrooms were very nice and clean, with sit-down toilets and hot water. Plenty of towels were provided.

What I found to be quite confusing, and made me walk down to the front desk for some help, was how the electricity (including the lights, coffee maker, TV, etc.) worked. It appears that nothing works when you walk into the room. However, the key to the room comes with a strange plastic card. This card is actually supposed to be put in a specially designed socket in the wall. Once the card is in the wall, all the electricity works. It's both a way for the hotel to preserve electrcity, and also a good way to remind you not to forget your hotel key.

The restaurant serves buffet meals throughout the day. Various kinds of meat, rice, and vegetables are available, along with a huge selection of cakes and desserts. If you have an extended layover with EgyptAir, each food voucher is good for a meal at the buffet.

If you have your bathing suit, feel free to use the pool outside.

Security is not a problem at the hotel. First, the hotel is surrounded by a locked gate. Second, after the armed guard at the gate, is a metal detector that guests must pass through before entering.

There is a free shuttle between the hotel and airport that runs a few times each hour. The airport is less than 5 mnutes away using this shuttle. Chances are this is the place you'll stay during an extended layover with EgyptAir.

Novotel

Writing pad an pen next to the telephone. Sewing kit next to the "Yellow Pages" in the drawer. Writing paper en envelopes with Novotel logo. Menu card for room service. plastic laundry bag. Guide to TV channels.

And there is more!

Showercap in a neat little carton box. Tiny bottles: shampoo and shower gel. Toilet paper folded to a V-shape. Glasses wrapped in plastic. WC sealed by a paper strip indicating it has been cleaned.

I’m in Cairo. I’d better tell you as this room could have been anywhere in the world. Nothing shows in which country I am.

Generally speaking I don’t like these international hotel chains. I only stay here because it’s 5 minutes (on foot) to Cairo Airport and my flight is at 5.45 AM and I have to be there two hours in advance.

No fear to oversleep. I will be woken up by a call from reception at 3.30 AM. Their shuttle will take me to the right terminal. It leaves on the hour and on the half hour.

There is round the clock food and drink. But we have decided not to have breakfast as this would mean getting up even earlier.

This Novotel is very comfortable. Enough opportunity to spend my last Egyptian pounds either on food or on souvenirs. If you buy souvenirs don’t forget to haggle!

I didn’t use their swimmingpool. It looked attractive with its sun lounges and brightly green and white striped bath towels.

We did not make a reservation and I was slightly worried that the hotel might be full. No way! There are four floors each with 58 rooms.

We paid US$145 without breakfast. With breakfast it would have been US$160
