Description: Best Things Nearby:
Town of Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, the Famous "Blowing Rock"
Best Things About the Resort:
Cool summer temperatures; manicured grounds
Resort Experience:
Of all the resorts in the Banner Elk, Boone, Blowing Rock area of the NC mountains, this is our favorite. Chetola is an older resort and has just begun an extensive renovation program. The terrain is hilly, but the grounds are immaculate, and are complete with walking paths and a beautiful lake. We always had the "unrenovated" units before and were satisfied, but this time we lucked out with one of the "renovated" ones. New carpets, some needed new furniture, and a spotless interior made this unit the best we’ve ever had here. Check-in was a breeze. In fact, we arrived over an hour early, and were able to check in immediately. It is not always that easy to find an exchange here (there are only 36 timeshare units), but this time our search was worth it.
Our two-bedroom unit had a good sized kitchen and dining area with a "step down" to the large 18’x30’ living room. The living room had large wet bar at one end and a wood burning stone fireplace at the other. The Master Bedroom had a Queen bed, and there was a separate "whirlpool" room with an oversized whirlpool tub. The Master Bath had a single sink and a curtained tub/shower. The second bedroom had two single beds, with a second bath containing a single sink with built in vanity, and a curtained tub/shower. All two-bedroom units have a full sized washer/dryer. Each unit also has a large 15’x12’ covered porch, from which one can enjoy the cool summer air and a great view of the NC Mountains.
The resort is only about ½ mile from the quaint town of Blowing Rock, which has many shops and restaurants. Be sure to check out Kilwin’s, a great ice cream and fudge shop. The resort backs up to the huge Moses Cone Estate, which has miles and miles of hilly, gravel "carriage" trails for hiking, walking, and jogging. If you can’t take the hills, you can also enjoy the 0.8-mile flat walking path that circles Cone Lake, about ½ mile from the resort. You may want to check out nearby Grandfather Mountain, the famous "Blowing Rock", and the Tweetsie Railroad (a theme park for kids of all ages). The Tanger Outlet Mall is right next door, a short walk away. The town of Boone, with shopping, golf, and most other "big town" stuff is about 5 miles north.
Chetola is starting to improve its activities program. Our week’s schedule featured an evening bonfire, on-site and off-site camps for the kids, a family night cookout, dance lessons, a night with a magic show, and lawn sports. There are several tennis courts on property, but golfers will have to make their tee times at one of several local area courses.
After this visit, I’d have no problem putting the "Gold Crown" stamp on Chetola Resort.
