They were very friendly and it was a nice location. It is very close to the redlight district so you can be there in a 5 minute walk.

This hotel was fantastic! My wife and i arrived prior to check-in time and this was no ptoblem for the hotel. They gave us a fantastic room on the west side of the hotel. it was very nice and large even by US standards. Room was approximately 20' x 30'. Bathroom was clean and large as well. Twin beds side by side was so so but the room more than made up for the bed. The hotel front desk staff and bell captain were fantastic! They offered assistance on getting to the correct public transportation stops and even made reservations for us to the Van Gogh museum so we would not have to wait in line. Requests for extra towels was not a problem. The wireless service was a bit slow but free so that was an even trade off. You could not ask for a better location for the hotel. You are right in city center with easy access to all the great sites! We were there for a week would stay at this hotel again.
Not the 4-Star Hotel That Was Advertised

The ad for the hotel stated that it is a 4-star and we were offered three nights for the price of two. Our room was extremely small - we're fairly small people and we kept bumping into each other. The decoration was poor. The location, on the other had, was great.

This was such a great hotel. Great location, right behind Dam Square, close to Ann Frank Museum, Central Station and great shopping area. Best thing about the hotel was the brasserie downstairs. The food was excellent, with great service. We ate there twice, we liked it so much. Our room was big, but ask for a room where the windows open, or preferably the ones with balconies. Our windows didn't open, and there was no a/c but they did have a fan. Was a little hot but not uncomfortable. The beds and bedding were fabulous, nice size bathroom too. We travel alot for business and pleasure and like to stay in nice hotels so for the price, location and comfort of this hotel, we would definitely stay here again.

A colleague and I stayed here for one night enroute to Africa. We pondered whether it was worthwhile going into the city for just one night, but on checking out the location of the Port Van Cleve, we decided it was an easy walk from the train station. We opted to check our luggage at the airport (10 Euros for all our bags), carry only the items we needed for overnight, and take the train (which runs every 15 minutes) to the main station. The plan worked like a charm. The hotel is quite charming (though the rooms are nothing exceptional). We took a nice long walk through the city to stretch our legs after a long flight, enjoyed the city sights, and then returned to the hotel's historic bar for a drink. Our very sweet waiter told us that the menu in the bar was the same as in the hotel restaurant, and recommended just stay put instead of moving to the restaurant. We took his recommendation and ordered one of the Dutch specialties, which seemed to go very well with the beer and Genever we were drinking. All in all it was a great choice and one I'd definitely repeat if traveling through Amsterdam again.
