Las Hayas Resort

Las Hayas is one of the 'resorts' in town. It's a huge white building that sits several hundred feet above the city surrounded by beech (hayas) trees. It has an unbeatable view of the town and the Beagle Channel from the restaurant and most of the rooms. The rooms are comfortably large and cozy, rather like a mountain chalet. The hotel has all the amenities of a first class hotel, restaurants, gift shop, workout room, pool, etc. Plus a delightful staff that opened the restaurant early one morning so we could at least get coffee and rolls before catching a 6 AM flight. And just as gracious when we came back an hour later because the flight had been delayed until further notice. So, we went back to the room for a nap before having breakfast again in their atrium dining room.

The restaurant is one of the best in town and it was the only place I saw Antarctic crab on the menu. I'd heard great praise for this delicacy from the cold waters of the south and dreamed of big chunks of crab dripping with melted butter. Alas, only in my dreams. Instead, the crab came in a luscious casserole with cream and cheese. I never did find the crab legs of my dreams.
