Quaint Hotel with Charm

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of April 2008. My honest opinion is, the hotel is quaint but not the luxury, 4 star which the website claims to be, but we had a discounted rate, so maybe that’s why our room wasn’t very fancy. I have read plenty of reviews that talked about the shoddy service and the lack of internet. Yes to both.

The hotel was cute and interesting. It was built in 1816 but I don’t know when the last remodel was. It’s a short walk from the main train station, Wien. Don’t bother taking a cab, they will rip you off, especially if you don’t know that the hotel is across the street and up the block.
The nearest underground was a 5 minute walk. The property is in a residential district, not near the ring. A 5 minute underground ride will get you there.

If you like breakfast and don’t want to pay 25Euro at the hotel, there’s not a whole lot around here to eat early in the morning. We found a little deli down the street that had pastries, coffees and sandwiches that opened at 7am.

The internet was nonexistent in the room. There was however, a computer right off the front lobby that we used to check our email. I don’t know if it cost anything, but we got right on the internet and did our business and never saw a charge on our bill. I’ve heard your laptop will work in the lobby, but we didn’t try it.
As far as service at the front desk, I felt the people working at the desk were a little aloof, maybe acted like they were better than us…I can’t really put my finger on it, but we didn’t really need much from them, so our interaction was limited.

The room was small and cute and the bathroom was a pretty good size. There was a safe in the room, but no iron, robes or coffee maker. The safe did not fit a laptop in it, which is big for us, as we never travel without it.
Our room looked out over the alley, which was fine, but we slept with the window open cuz it was WARM in there at night and the banging starts early in the am in that alley.
The bed was comfortable enough and the sink in the bathroom was small, but there was a shelf above the toilet, to keep all your bathroom accoutrements. I noticed no clock, but on our last day, I saw that the clock is at the bottom of the TV. A day late and a dollar short, as usual.

We did have a couple cocktails at the small bar across from the lobby a couple times.

The best part was the restaurant across that small alley called
Weissgerberstube.
The food was awesome and the prices weren’t bad. The waiter said that the same food was available in the ACTUAL hotel restaurant, but we chose to eat in this cute little dining room, 2 nights in a row. The food was really, really good. We’re very happy that we stopped in here. The national dish, goulash was wonderful as were the appetizers we tried. The prices at this place were great, even with the exchange rate from US dollars to Euro. The service here was also great. Very attentive and willing to answer any questions we had about the food.

Remember that smoking is a national pastime in Europe and Vienna was no exception. Everyone smokes in all the restaurants and it can be a bit of a bother sometimes as most restaurants are small and there is nowhere to hide from the smokers. Weissgerberstube did ask if we wanted smoking or non, but the smokers were 5 feet from us, so it didn’t matter.

If you want to be in the middle of the action, this is not the hotel for you. Like I said, the ring is a short metro ride away.

We did like this hotel and it was good for what we needed. We don’t mind using public transportation, but all the major sights were a bit away, so it would have been nice to walk out of my hotel and be in the middle of it all.
