Gabriel

The Hotel Gabriel is one of those hotels that leaves you spellbound. My introduction to the hotel came by happenstance, as me and my traveling partner wandered endlessly to search for a hotel.

After ferrying us from Prague, the Eurolines bus dropped us off at a small bus stop adjacent to the Erdberg metro station at around midnight. We didn’t know the area, so we inquired with locals who led us up the road to an Accor-brand hotel, which was full for the “dog show.” With hundreds of dogs wandering the lobby and outside, I’m not sure I would even want to stay there even if they had rooms, so we trudged on. We soon found ourselves lost in an industrial area, but a pretty nice guy stopped his car and offered to ride us to a nearby hotel – the Gartenhotel Gabriel.

I didn’t expect to be driven to a hotel which will last in my memories forever. But this is exactly what happened. We arrived, I checked in with the desk clerk regarding the rates. 135 euros? “No,” I said. “We’ll move on.” Immediately the very friendly clerk offered us a promotional rate of 85 euros – a steal for this quality.

I accepted, and was led to a very nice room with two twin beds, with modern, stylish bedding. The room had a trendy couch, a small television, well-equipped bathroom with free toiletries, and décor fit for a king. The highlight of this hotel, though, is mainly in its hallways and common areas. There are so many antique paintings, bronze and gold finish on the staircases, chandeliers hanging everywhere (including the rooms!), and Austrian charm exuding from all corners.

When I thought it couldn’t get any better, I discovered what “breakfast” meant in Austria. I expected bread, butter, and coffee, and instead received a gourmet breakfast (served buffet style) featuring back bacon, farm-fresh eggs, hard boiled brown eggs, assorted premium cold cuts, excellent cheeses, sliced peppers, cottage cheese, and a variety of juices. Oh, and there was bread, too – somehow neglected in the vast array of choice. One major highlight of the breakfast was the liver pate, served up in small containers, which was a great luxurious treat.

I couldn’t have asked for a better stay at any hotel. The staff were truly amazing and made us feel right at home and really wanted us to have a good time.

The hotel is located on a major bus route, so getting to and from it is easy. It’s located on Landstrasser Hauptstrasse, connecting Erdberg area to central Vienna. I would recommend this to anyone arriving by bus and wanting a nice place to stay, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but still linked to it conveniently. It’s a great choice for couples, too, as its very romantic ambience will set the mood for any occasion.
