Holiday Inn can be a good travel value in China, especially in new properties such as in Hohhot. Great rooms for about USD 50 per night, if you are in Inner Mongolia. Travelers, however, should beware, however, of one China Holiday Inn property, the Beijing Lido. In the past, it has been a real Western Oasis, offering good food and service. Management, however, has allowed the hotel decline terribly; witness my recent experience:1. On several occasions, Beijing taxi drivers tried to overcharge me right in the front of the Bell Captain. I had to dispute the fare myself, leaving me to wonder who pays the Bell Hops. The staff does not care.
2. When I arrived at the hotel, the luggage folks were snoozing inside, and offered to help me with my bags, AFTER I had lugged them inside and arrived at the desk.
3. The food at the Patio restaurant, once home to a wonderful buffet, was disgusting. The Chinese fried noodles tasted like a frozen dinner taken from the microwave.
4. The staff at the business center and the concierge staff are clueless about Beijing.
5. Poor and expensive Internet service in the rooms. I am very computer savvy and spent hours wrestling with the awful system. In general, the staff are not very nice.In Beijing, I would recommend hotels closer to the city center, as these are much easier for access to attractions such as Tiananmen Square and museums.
