Description: The Motel Hamburg is a comfortable hotel conveniently located only a
3-minute walk from the University Hospital and its research institutes and a
15- to 20-minute bus ride north of the city centre. The main advantage for business travellers here is that along with the 35+ rooms, there are also 20 or so spaces in
individual parking garages. Given the limited parking in this area, this is a real plus for car owners and very secure.
The hotel rooms are very
comfortable. Many guests at the research institute where I was working stay at this hotel because it so conveniently located. The first time I stayed, I was given a double room with two twin beds and an en-suite bathroom on the first floor. The second time I stayed, I was given a single room on the ground floor which was about half the size with one twin bed, and the bathroom was about half the size as well (the door had to be shut to see the shower). Every room has comfortable beds with feather pillows and duvets, bedstand with lamp, large wooden wardrobe, TV with remote, and either a desk and chairs (in the double) or a little table and a plush armchair (in the single). The bathroom has a shower, toilet, sink, and large mirror, plus its own radiator, which is nice. Hamburg is very cold in the winter, but these rooms have
multiple radiators, which you can adjust. My single room (#36) had a tiled floor with heating elements under it, so you could actually make the floor hot. All rooms are free of street noise because the hotel is tucked away from the main road.
The price of a
single room with breakfast was
70 euros per night. The breakfast was on from 6am to 11am above the front desk and had a
good buffet with fresh rolls, butter, jam, honey, deli meats, cheeses, yogurt, cereal, boiled eggs, juice, and milk. There were also German newspapers and occasionally the
International Herald Tribune (but you had to beat the other English speakers to breakfast to read this one). The staff was quite friendly and brought guests coffee or tea.
My only complaint about the hotel is that they don't have any designated no-smoking rooms. In the double, the smoke came in from the hallway. The single was better since it was only accessed from the outside, but this seemed less safe to me. At breakfast, there were signs on every table politely asking you not to smoke, but these were right next to ashtrays--sending a mixed message.
To find the hotel, look for the lighted "Motel" sign or the neon blue "Motel Hamburg" sign on the brick walls near the entrance driveway.
Bus #5 runs frequently (every few minutes) from the city centre up Hoheluftchaussee. Get off at
Gartnerstrasse.
