Punta Cana Hotel: Hidden jewel

  • March 4, 2009
  • Rated 5 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
I found this jewel of a hotel on aonline travel website. It was a great value, and less than 1/2 the cost of a "luxury resort" we stayed at in PC.. The PuntaCana Hotel is one of the oldest resorts on the island and counts Oscar De La Renta as one of its original investors. You can imagine the attention to detail and quiet elegance of this place. The 1500 acre ecological preserve was magnificent, and my wife and I greatly enjoyed swimming in the limestone pools in this protected forest. The staff was kind and gracious--generally friendly and helpful. By the second day one of the wait staff would fill my orange juice glass without my asking. An excellent value for the traveller who likes peace and quiet. Lots of sophisticated savvy European travelers here and an electric mix of US folks also--young and old--a pleasant group.

Puntacana Resort and Spa

Although the grounds of the resort were nice, our stay at the Puntacana Resort and Spa was anything but. First, there were no guest books located in our rooms. If I hadn't visited the resort's website before traveling, I would not have known about amenities and services offered. Because the resort is so secluded and not near any commercial district, you are forced to eat at the resort restaurants which are very expensive given the quality of the food ($60 for two burgers and a drink). You have to make reservations to some of the restaurants which we found to be impossible even when trying to reserve 3 days in advance. The hotel staff was not honest or responsive to guests' needs. Out antiquated television set did not work upon arrival. The bell hop promised that he would send someone to check it out. Once we tipped him we never saw him again nor did anyone come to fix the television. We took a courtesy shuttle provided by the resort to a nearby shopping center and was told that a shuttle would arrive in a couple of hours to pick us up. We waited and waited and no shuttle came back for us. Luckily, we had our cell phones and were able to call the hotel to ask them to pick us up. I would not reccommend this resort to persons who like to experience the culture and foods of a region. The resort was very secluded and void of the life, music, and foods of the Dominican Republic.

my wife and i travel quite a bit and i found what i thought was a good deal at this resort the resort was clean and the people where as nice as could be , but the food was not only way over priced but it was the worst tasting food i have eaten in the caribbean, and i have been too a lot of locations and eaten in all types of resturant,s i thought it might only be the first of the four resturant,s they had but we almost starved the week we spent there someone need,s to tell them food not only need,s to look good it must taste edible also, Also there is no elevators there and it,s a long climb to the third floor, the place is spread out a lot also and the rent on golf carts is not cheap, the beach was cleaned twice a day but still was not very clean, the drinks there where also way too high priced, I know my wife and i will not be there ever again and maybe not to D.R. jim jernigan vickisburg,Ms.

We loved it!

We recently stayed at the Punta Cana Hotel and loved it! We have a 14 year old daughter and an 11 year old son and stayed in a two bedroom beach casitas. The price on the travel website was significantly less than any other site so I was skeptical. We're not really the all inclusive type but wanted to try Punta Cana so we chose this resort. The food was fabulous...lobsters, steaks and even the pool side pizza was great. On our arrival we were told that the chef had invited us to be his guest and the guest of the sous chef at one of the resort restaurants and we were treated to an incredible 5 course meal with drinks, wine and some wonderful company. We never would have thought that they would have treated us so well with such a steeply discounted rate. We also snorkeled (which is just ok in the DR), played tennis, wind surfed, went on the banana boats, rented mini speed boats but our favorite memories will be driving around a golf cart to explore the property, the hammocks and long walks on the beautiful beaches. We walked for 45 minutes and were still on resort property. The staff was very friendly although their command of English and our understanding of Spanish created some barriers at times but all in all we had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this resort.
