Disappointing: New Miyako Hotel, Kyoto

Read a travel guide that called the rooms "gorgeous". Perhaps that was 20 years ago, or they were staying in a different hotel from me. Everything was clean but well worn and long in need of updating.
Front desk and restaurant staff are friendly and helpful. Lobby is elegant, as are corridors, so it's a disappointment to open your room door and step back so many years. Room is small to begin with and the bathroom is in some kind of pre-fabricated cabin, so you have to step up to get inside. Bathroom is tiny and there no place to lay out your toiletries bag.
Best thing about this hotel is the location: 5 minute walk west of the JR Station. Lots of convenience stores, fast food places on the ground floor of the station. (Of particular merit is the Italian eatery "Pastamore" where two can eat for less than $20 US and the food is super. Avoid the over-priced and under-sized soft drink menu however.)
At the New Miyako, a cup of tea in the lobby costs $7 US. Breakfast buffet in "Le Plaisir" runs $21 per person. We saw a dinner advertised for $39 US. Nice people and good service.
New Mikayo has a good location and that's what we paid for this time. Next visit to Kyoto I'll seek somewhere else with newer rooms and overall better value.
New Miyako Hotel
Conveniently located directly across the street from the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) station, it is in a great location. It is within walking distance of many temples and other interesting places. The hotel has over 700 rooms, many restaurants, bars, several retail shops, a coffee shop and a beauty salon. Rooms all have toiletries, coffee/tea maker, refrigerator, hair dryer, TV and trouser press. I liked this hotel for its location, it was a very convenient base for exploring Kyoto and the surrounding area.
