This hotel is one the very most desirable hotels in the city. It is quietly located on a pleasant street, but near the Kurfuerstendamm (the shopping and business district of West Berlin), not far from the Zoo Bahnhof and the KaiserWilhelm Memorial Church. The hotel is a former Wilhelmine grand apartment building, arranged around a glassed over courtyard, now a wintergarden filled with tropical plants, where breakfast is served in the morning and drinks in the evening. The flagship restaurant, the Quadriga (Michelin one star), is one of the best in the city and may be very highly recommended (ca $100 each, with wine). There is also less formal dining at the hotel too, which features very good food and is somewhat less expensive (maybe $35-50).
The hotel''s service and the reception you will encounter is polite, friendly, helpful and efficient. Tastefully decorated throughout, the hotel features none of the tacky pink and white draperies and upholstery so often found in Germany and Austria. Instead, the guest rooms are furnished with Bauhaus style furniture and light-colored wood paneling. There are three price categories (and some single rooms are available); but it is definitely worth reserving one of the luxury rooms, which are large, quiet and very comfortable. Maybe you think Bauhaus furnishings don''t sound comfortable? Well, they are, with more softness--leather, wool, etc.--than you probably tend to associate with that style. And the cost of a top room (ca $250) is quite reasonable compared with New York or London prices.
There is a subway stop (Augustinerstrasse) one block away.
