My husband and I and several of our friends and family have stayed at this hotel for a number of years, several times a year. The area is quiet, immaculate, scenic. There is a lot to do for a variety of ages. The staff is ALWAYS courteous and caters to your every need. The saloon is a blast and moderate live entertainment is provided on the weekends. This hotel is very close to the highway, but not so close that you hear every truck. The Tonto hatchery is very interesting and within a short drive or a good hike. The creek and surrounding forest is a photgraphers dream come true with lots of animals, fish, birds. The food is pretty good, but for the area it is excellent. Keep in mind, this is a small town atmosphere and 'big city' luxuries are just not needed! Although not every visit has been perfect, and won't be as long as humans manage the place, but if you call attention to your concerns, they are immediately addressed to your satisfaction. That in itself speaks volumes. Yes, they are a time-share and a public hotel, and will try to sell you a membership, but all you have to say is no and that is the end of it. No pressure.... We love Kohls!

Horrible experience

The owner of this motel was VERY rude. There was a gas leak in the room which we reported to the gas company. The room was dirty with 2 dirty towels even though we stated there would be 3 of us. There was no shampoo, etc. The beds were hard and very cheap with what looked like dirty cheap bedding. The heater was noisy. We were awakened early by men working and cussing in the room next to us. It was a Friday night and we were the only ones there so that should have been our first clue to how bad the place was. We will be reporting them to the chamber of commerce and also the Better Business Bureau.

Would not stay again

Site states pet friendly however at check in our room was changed to the least valued with two double beds as opposed to the king we booked. We were charged $20.00 for our 5# toy poodle when we complained about the room they did refund that portion. They are a Time Share facility and are interested in presenting that sales pitch. Beautiful and interesting in the western theme around Payson we will go back to tour that area again but would not stay at Kohl's Ranch Lodge.

Best Things Nearby:
Hiking

Best Things About the Resort:
The friendly staff and on-site stables were pluses. The pool and Jacuzzi were great for evening swims.

Resort Experience:
All in all, I found this to be a very laid-back resort. It is very family-friendly. I left my son home on this trip but will definitely bring him the next time.

We used the resort as a home base as we hit the area hiking trails, but we also took advantage of the horseback riding. The trail rides were somewhat limited, but the wranglers were great.

I took advantage of the resort’s library (in a loft above the lobby) and enjoyed tickling the ivory on the grand piano.

Though we cooked most meals in our units, we took advantage of the barbeque grills one night, when they had a campfire and music, and it was a nice, relaxing evening. They had karaoke each night in the bar, which we attended one night (live music was advertised for that evening, but it never materialized). Since the bar primarily caters to guests, it was a fun, friendly atmosphere.

The Jacuzzi in the evenings (when the temperatures dropped) was a great place to meet other guests and trade advice on places to see and things to do in the area.

We stayed in a Canyon Creek unit, which looked a bit like a trailer from the outside, but once inside it was quite nice. We had a two-bedroom. The unit has a nice-sized living room/dining room. The kitchen was spacious and well stocked for cooking.

The bedrooms were also spacious and each had their own separate bathrooms. The bathrooms were stocked with Sedona Spa shampoo, conditioner, soaps, and lotions.

The Lodge staff stopped by daily to provide fresh towels and any other supplies needed. They were always friendly and helpful.

Tonto Creek runs past the unit, and there is a fitness trail along it. We walked along the creek and found some nice secluded spots to enjoy a book and the sound of the running water.

The resort also has a day spa and fitness center, but I did not use these facilities.

  • Unit Type: 2 Bedroom
  • Activities: Very Good
  • Amenities: Good
  • Unit Satisfaction: Excellent
  • Family Friendliness: Very Good
  • Service: Excellent

Kohl's Ranch Lodge

Kohl's Ranch offers rooms and cabins in the woods alongside Tonto Creek. The lodge is about 17 miles east of downtown Payson along route 260. We stayed in the cheapest room, which was pretty typical for hotels. Check the internet for good room deals--our room normally went for $135 a night but we reserved online for $80 a night.

Kohl's Ranch offers a heated pool, riding stables, volleyball courts, a playground, exercise facilities and (my favorite) a great big hammock by the creek. The main drawback is the restaurant. The food is average and overpriced, probably because there is no competition for almost 20 miles. However, rooms come equipped with a fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, dishes and silverware, and dishwashing materials. I'd advise guests to bring their own foods for whatever meals they don't want to buy in town.
