Description: The
Metropolitan Hotel (email metropolitan@loews.com) is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan and is in close proximity to Radio City, The Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Broadway theaters, shopping on 5th Avenue, and is just nine blocks away from Grand Central Station. The 51st Street subway stop is located right next to the hotel.
We reserved our room about a week or so after September 11. Consequently, we got a bargain rate of $99 per night, which is to my knowledge virtually unheard of for a Midtown Manhattan hotel for a weekend at the height of Christmas season. We also had a free business class upgrade, which was offered to us and we didn't even ask for.
Our room was a little larger than most of the other hotel rooms we've had in New York such as the W Hotel, and had a king size bed. It was clean, but the furnishings were distinctly average and in need of an update. After taking everything in I felt like I just wanted to lay on the bed for a minute and absorb the mediocrity. The plumbing proved to be rather finicky as well, and seemed to be on life support at times. Though we were told maintenance had been in the room to check things out while we were away, we never noticed any improvement.
If the rooms were updated to the degree that the lobby and bar have been, this would be a great place to stay. Overall, we'd call our hotel stay a moderate success. The best thing this hotel has going for it is its location. If you can afford it, we much prefer the W Hotel, which is only about a block away at 541 Lexington, or the Grand Hyatt near Grand Central Station. The raging bargain rate we got saved the day, making this stay worthwhile. All other things being equal, we'd probably prefer to pay up for the privilege of staying at the W next time around.
