I arrived early and my room was not ready-I was given complimentary cocktails in the lobby and room ready in 5 minutes. Service was prompt and friendly. Expresso machine in the room was great! Location is perfect. Euro size rooms but very comfy beds

Swissotel Amsterdam

Being my first time in Amsterdam, I just choose brand-name lodging smack in the middle of the touristy area. I knew I didn't have time to get lost and find my way around, so a hotel on Damrak was great--there was no confusion about how to get back to my hotel.

Since I only had 24 hours in Amsterdam, the hotel served more as a regrouping area. Again, due to its proximity to the center of town, it was great to stop in every 2 hours or so to drop off things I've purchased or to just simply put on more layers of clothes, as the weather was FRIGID.

It's actually a very small hotel. It reminded me of a small boutique hotel in NYC, rather than a major hotel chain. The rooms are clean and of a standard European size. If you ask for two twin beds, expect them to be pushed together. If you are sharing a room with someone you rather not be in the same bed with, this might be a problem.

Note: the showers are kinda funny. There is a flapping half-glass thing that shields the rest of the bathroom from the shower pressure. But because it covers only half of the tub, the bathroom still gets wet. I'm not quite sure what the logic is. It's kinda interesting.

Swissotel Amsterdam

The SWISSOTEL was our base for a long New yrs eve weekend. We booked a mini package from the Uk which included the flight and room which turned out tobe a great deal. The stack rates per night were quite a bit more than what we paid, (rooms on the hotel brochure are advertised at 145 euros per night) so it certainly pays to shop around.

We arrived at the train station, from the airport, and the location of this hotel was perfect…just a 15 minute walk down the main street, located on the corner of Dam square.

We arrived with heavy backpacks and in a huge blizzard and still made it from train station to hotel without needing a taxi!!

The staff on reception spoke great English as well as trying to help us with some Dutch words. They were friendly and helpful.

Our room was a nice big size but the décor was a little flowery, which reminded me more of a motel than a luxury hotel. The furniture, however, was lovely, pale wood, extra chairs, TV (complete with porn!!), telephones, iron, robes, safe, etc.

The bathroom was also big, with a bath/shower and big vanity area. The mirror was trippy with view upon view of ourselves (no, it wasn't the drugs) The only downside was the useless hairdryer. It was a really old style and would have taken about an hour or more to dry hair as it was so crap. Not really a major problem, but as it was -5 outside coulda done with drying hair once in a while.

For business travellers (or even keen IgoUgo folk), they do have a pretty good Internet room with about 6 computers.

We didn’t get breakfast included in our package and didn’t really care as there were so many great places close by to get Dutch pancakes or just about anything.

Being located in Dam square the Swissotel was very central to everything and a tram stop was just outside for those days you just don't feel like walking.

"What a nice hotel; if only it were closer to town." That pretty much sums up my attitude about the hotel I stayed at on my last trip. So, this time around, for a little extra cash, we stayed at a hotel right next to Dam Square. As it turns out, that was money well-spent: on such a short trip, there was no time to be wasted getting to and from the hotel. Dam Square is the center of it all: walking distance to all the major attractions and also a short walk from the train station, where you can catch a train directly to the airport. The hotel was also across the street from a bicycle rental place.

Aside from that, there is not much to tell about the Swissotel. The room was almost identical to the one I stayed in on my last trip, at a Crowne Plaza (Travelocity makes these decisions for me). It was big enough to be comfortable, but no bigger. I guess at a place like this, you don't want surprises. Well, there was one odd thing -- for some reason, the shower had only half a door. As it turns out, half a door is about as effective as no door at all. Either the Dutch don't understand showers, or I don't understand Dutch showers.

If you're looking for charm and character, go somewhere else. This is just a comfortable and convenient place to sleep.
