Great Splurge

Great Splurge

We stayed at the Grand Bretagne. The hotel is immaculate. This was our splurge hotel and our room was beautiful. The bed was SO comfortable especially after 2 weeks of sleeping on really hard beds. The room was larger than I expected it to be and the bathroom was huge with marble, two sinks and huge shower (with a rain shower head, I love those!) and a separate tub.

We loved Athens. The accommodations and location were great. The pool was nice and the restaurant overlooking the Acropolis is a must. Comparable to other 5 star hotels in Paris and Rome, with a lower price.

Hotel Grande Bretagne

First thing first, I stayed at this hotel using points, so price wasn't a factor.

The hotel is one of the landmark hotels in Athens, and is marketed under Starwood's Luxury Collection brand. It was built in 1842 and restored in 2003. It is located in downtown Athens, on Syntagma Square. To get to the hotel from Athens airport, take the Metro and get off at Syntagma Square station, then take the Syntagma Square/Grande Bretagne exit. The hotel is right around the corner if you take the correct exit - very convenient. It is also very close to the shopping area (such as the Louis Vuitton store).

The room is furnished in "old world" style but with modern amenities. In the junior suite, the bathroom has two wash basins and the shower area is huge with plenty of room to move. Toiletries are from Molton Brown so quality was very good. Housekeeping was also very good with restocking the complementary bottled water and the fruit bowl.

Make sure you check out the pool/spa area. There are a variety of free saunas to try (some with herbal treatment), and the swimming pool was small but functional.
