Worst Hotel Experience Ever

The Fortuna Beach was the worst hotel experience ever. We had 1 night booked but ended up being there a day early, so went directly to the hotel to see if we could check in a day earlier. It was after 6 and the front desk said we could not check in because no one was at guest services. That was the stupidest thing I had every heard, the front desk/reception not being able to check on rooms. So we left to go down to the Sheraton, but decided to try calling 1-800-Wyndham to see if they could check on rooms. In hindsight, we should have left at that point, but we did not want to move from one hotel to another so we decided to call and we were able to get a reservation for that evening. Of course since it was out of the country the 1-800 number did not work, so we had to pay an additional 15-20 for the call because the front desk could not check on rooms. We went back into the hotel and the girl was totally clueless as to what to do. We had to actually tell her to check her reservations screen to see if the reservations was there. Once she finally figured that part out we had to wait another half hour for her to find us a room. She was actually trying to find us the same room for both nights and was having trouble, and was looking for oceanfront and the other girl told her not to give us an oceanfront. Once we finally got our room we were not thrilled. It was very nasty, disgusting floor tiles, old and stained and mini fridge was totally rusted out, etc. We then went down to the buffet for dinner and the food was terrible, e left most of it uneaten. They had tuna steaks that evening but you could not even request how you wanted it cooked, they were paper thin and just fried in oil until they were overdone. It is such a shame how much food is wasted. We went back to our room because we were tired from the aggravating check-in process and were awakened at 1am to someone trying to break into our room from the adjoining doors between the rooms. The next morning we called guest services at 8am to get dinner reservations that evening and of course nothing was available. We then went to have breakfast but my husband just sat there and did not eat anything as the food was so bad the evening before. I had a pancake that was dry and some fatty bacon. I did not even attempt to try the eggs as they were just a runny looking mess. Looking at the other tables, we could see lots of other uneaten food on many plates. We then checked out of our room to be moved to another room. At 10:30 I asked when our room would be ready and she said that checkout is not until 11 but would put a rush on it. When we left our room we saw the cleaning ladies already in some of the rooms, so I was hoping it would not be long. At 12:30 I went back and the other girl looked at me as if I was nuts for asking about my room at that time, but if checkout is at 11:00 I would think that 1 1/2 hours would be sufficient time to clean a room. So finally at 1:30 the room was ready after I sat around in the lobby for another hour. I must admit that this room was a little nicer than our first, but our original reservation was for a king bed and room was a double but after the aggravation at check-in we did not bother complaining. For dinner and breakfast the next morning we left and ate off of the property, costing us more money since we paid more at this property than we would have at the Sheraton since it was an all inclusive, so on top of paying more for the hotel room to begin, we had additional food and phone costs. We were so disgusted with the hotel that we did not stay on the property, so we also did not have any drinks there and when we did stop at the bar on our way to our room to get a bottle of water they did not have any, so I asked for a ginger ale which again they did not have. Some all-inclusive, No water or ginger, we had to pay for it at the vending machines. We absolutely hated this resort, the rooms were dirty, the food terrible, front desk was incompetent

Bad weather, still a good time.

If you are seeking a value all inclusive, this is the perfect place. Unfortunately we stayed at a much better one in Jamaica and it spoiled us when we arrived here. The hotel needs a few upgrades and perhaps some more activities for those who enjoy spending the day there. However, the island is beautiful and safe enough where you can go for a walk, jog, bike or car ride. The hotel offers their own shuttle on their website and it is much more affordable than the one on this site. The food was great however, you must call in advance to make reservations for the Asian or Italian restaurant in order to get a table. The beach was nice even though the weather was not great for us in January. Make sure you bring appropriate clothing because the resort is not well prepared for cold weather. The service and the staff were great. A good mix of couples and families. A great time for someone seeking a quiet vacation with options of water sports, casino gambling, and some good shopping values. Perfect for a first time Carribean experience or All Inclusive experience.

This is a fantastic place to set up headquarters for a dive trip to Grand Bahama. The hotel and dive staffs are exceedingly friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and the food is good and plentiful. I have already recommended this hotel to my friends and colleagues.

It's an older, more cottage like hotel. The staff is very friendly and the beach was great. Not close enough to the straw markets. The food could be better. Take your own glass....the glasses are all small in the bar areas. The beds were comfy and the rooms weren't bad. Beware of the timeshare people. They approach you as soon as you check in.

Great place for families, there is something for everyone. They have done some upgrades since our 2007 stay. The animation crew are all very fun and friendly. Our son loved the staff at the Kids club, the pool table, and most of all the staff taught our son at the flying trapeze. He got to do grabs from his bar to another and got swong really high. We enjoyed the nightly shows they were entertaining (this is not Broadway, don't expect it). We missed that they are not doing the nightly bingo before the shows anymore. I think that use to draw more people to watch the nightly shows. We all had a blast! I really found this to be a value for an all inclusive vacation. Don't expect 4-5 star accomodations and you won't be disappointed. The Asian dining has 4-5 appetizers/dinners, and 3 deserts to choose from and they were out of several of the choices. For only having ten menu items, it is pretty bad to be out of them. We almost had to beg for something other than water to drink. We did not even wait for desert. Maybe the waitress was just having a really bad night. They have a very beautiful beach, watch out for the few but toe stubbing rocks. We love staying at VIVA and will be back again some day! Rent a car and drive on the wrong side of the road for a week (they drive on the left side). That was a blast! Also go to Gold Rock Beach and Ben's caves about 20 miles east it was very nice.
