Hotel Van Belle

Hotel Van Belle

Okay...if you see pictures of this place on the Internet make sure you know what you are looking at, before you book. But before I get too down on this hotel let me tell you some of the good points...Hotel Van Belle is within walking distance of the Grand Market, the center of all tourist activity. The neighborhood has definite character, a little dirty, but definitely character. Be careful it is extremely easy to get turned around in this place. Many of the streets work on a spoke system, so make sure you know which spoke you walked out of before you walk down another. The train station is also within walking distance. The hotel lobby is nice. There is a fireplace and sitting area. Breakfast is complimentary....and let me say, this was the best free breakfast I had my entire trip.

In regard to the sleeping arrangements....The hotel is split into two parts. The hotel and the hostel...I stayed in the hostel. Staying here I felt like a princess in a tower. In fact, I felt like this everywhere I stayed. Somehow I always managed to stay on the top floor. Anyway, my room was at the top of a narrow, spiraling staircase, by the time I reached the top the step was only 3 inches deep. The room was a bit of a shock. No,...I think "room" is to big of a word to use, hmmm....perhaps "closet" would be the best word. Yes, "closet"....a faux, wood paneled closet.....with a sink and a bed. Technically, I was in the attic. The window was on the ceiling and you can open it up to get a rooftop view of the street below.

The bed was the worst I ever slept on, I could feel the springs poking me all night....I had to drink wine just to go to sleep. I didn't really sleep much for the two nights I was there, but then again I guess I got to experience more of Brussels' night sounds.

The bathrooms were communal, the toilet was on one end of the hallway and the shower was on the other. Both were reasonably clean.

The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful which kind of, but not entirely made up for the crappy beds. The hostel side of the hotel cost $25 per night.
