Stayed here last summer for 5 days. Very big resort. It was nice. We loved the pools and the view was excellent. Would definitely stay here again.

Den Of Thieves Inside the Palace

My review on the RIU Palace Cabo San Lucas had been delayed. I was giving management the courtesy of a few weeks to reply and make good on destroying my vacation. My wife and I stayed at the RIU Palace from Feb 19th to 24th. Our first full day there our room safe was robbed. We hid the key to the safe inside my computer bag along with $20.00. The thief found the key, found the $20.00. opened up the safe and took $500.00 more and locked the safe and put the key back in the bag. I found out that most guests hide the safe key in their room because they do not want to carry it into the pool or ocean. The RIU promotes thief by having key type safes rather than the combination type safes found in most first class hotels.
What was worse than losing $500.00 was the treatment by management after the robbery. It took them over 90 minutes to finally come to the room to see first hand what happened. That happened only because I had to go down to their office and search them out. The Asst Director came to the room. She treated it as an everyday occurrence which I guess it might be. She then routinely said that she would give us a room upgrade. It was as if she really believed that a room upgrade was a cure all. They did check the door lock computer to see who used the key to enter. The only person before me was the maid and I was in the room twice after her so that ruled her out. At least it did by normal means. Later that night I figured out how someone got in without it being recorded on the computer. The door to the room was faulty. On leaving the door would slam shut but not always lock. An employee that knew this could always check to see if it was not locked and perform their dirty deed. I showed this to the manager and figured that they would claim it as the fault of the resort. They not only would not claim responsibility but did their best to avoid us. A little compassion towards us at a time like this would have gone a long ways. About 10:00 that night we finally tracked down the assistant at the show and asked her if she could get us into town the next day for our activity and so we could access an ATM machine. She refused to even help us with that. Naturally a heated argument erupted and we were escorted to the director’s office. While there he followed the company line that a report was made and sent to RIU headquarters and that is all they can do. On leaving the office I told him and the assistant that I will put this in on line reviews and that many US and Canadian travelers use this site before making their final selection. She just laughed at me and said "go ahead".
The final decision by the RIU customer service dept was that since the room or safe did not show any signs of forcible entry that the RIU insurance company would not cover our loss. Even though the door was faulty I guess I should have found an axe and smash the door in before reporting it. Instead I did the honest thing and told the truth.
What I am asking now is for all readers of this review, regardless if you ever been to the RIU, regardless if you were ever robbed, to let them know that thief of another person’s property should be taken more seriously than just offering a room upgrade. Please email him and let him know that reviews represents the opinions of many travelers. Travelers whose opinions we listen to and someone that the RIU should be listening to.

Nice Facility but the Food Service Was Terrible!

We recently stayed at the Riu Palce in Cabo San Lucas. As other reviews indicate the facility is decent and well appointed. Our biggest disappointment was in the food service and quality. Forget dining in one of the specialty restaurants, unless you want to get up at 5:30 a.m., wait in line and still be turned away because all are full. The bufet is marginal at best and not anywhere near the quality of a cruise line. The staff was marginally friendly but not what you would expect in Mexico. No matter what question or service we asked in 7 days the answer was always no. We came to call this the no-go resort.

Great Place to Celebrate your Birthday

Stayed for 8 days at this wonderful location. Checking in was a breeze. The room was clean, food was good. I recommend the Chrystal Restraunt. The head waiter brought me a birthday cake and the wait staff sang Happy b-day. Champaigne flowed gallor. Entertainment was fun and the entertainment staff went out of their way to get everyone involved. I even went on stage to do the "No No" dance! The bartnders were in competition to impress me with birthday shots. I enjoyed every minute of my stay and highly recommend this place for any special ocassion. I can't wait til next year as I am planning on returning to the Rui Palace.

RIU is not 5-star...not even close

If you expect any sort of service, don't stay here. Most of the things people are compaining in these reviews are ablsolutely true. 1) they tried to put us on the construction side of the hotel - we refused 2) the beds are really hard 3) The drinks are weak, no top shelf liquor. 4) you have to make dinner reservations each day or you don't get to eat. The best part about this place was the price, the view of los cabos and the free shuttle to and from the airport. Try a different hotel.
