This a true cultural experience. If you want an American-style hotel, don't stay here. We thought it was beautiful!

El Tapatio Resort and Spa

This is where we stay when we travel to Guadalajara to visit friends. It's close (relatively) to the airport and very close to the shopping in Tlaquepaque. The rooms are large and classically decorated. The pool is terrific and the people are marvelous. Breakfast was fine, but we usually had dinner out. But it's inexpensive (if you call the hotel directly and book with them) and very very reliable. If you are travelling with two rooms worth of people, get adjoining rooms with a cute little passageway along the porch side of the room. And as far as the porch is concerned, you won't find a better view of Guadalajara anywhere in the city (the hotel is up on a hill, you see).

By the way, you will get the local rate if you contact the hotel directly versus working through a travel agent or website. I find that faxing a reservation request and receiving a reservation confirmation by fax seems to work best. You will find that WRITTEN communications are always completed by people who write very good English, but telephone communications can get confused.

And please don't hesitate to drop me a line with your own observations about this journal/review. I like to see if my advice has value. Email me at rickhowe@aol.com

Staying at this resort was a bad experience for us for a number of reasons. We were overcharged before we arrived. We had arranged accommodations through the hotel for $121, and when we arrived it was $131. The $121 was to include everything. The staff was rude and did not warmly greet us during our stay. Converting money was a hassle, and we were double charged for breakfast. The breakfast was not worth it. The room was clean but old, and you could tell. The hotel sits on top of a mountain overlooking the city, a very beautiful overlook. But overall it was not worth it.
