had a great time even with the hotel problems...

Went with family and large group for my daughter & son in laws wedding end of January '08. The perfect weather along with our group made our time in Puerta Vallarta amazing, but... do put your foot down for what ever your needs are. I had rooms set before arriving (hours on the phone from home), then upon arrival, had to go through it all again. No real problems with the time share sales, it was mainly our rooms not being available, ready, not near each other, etc. Fortunately several of us received free upgrades. This made things much more palatable. The safe in your room is a nice thing to have, the grocers down the street is within walking distance, 5 minutes by cab or bus to town. The hotels sandy beach (though small) was all enjoyable. Great massage for the money. Breakfast buffet was good. There's a little store and deli at the sister hotel next door. Occasional cheap eats in the eve on the patio out front. Staff is kind. As I get older, I'm not at all cheap, but I no longer feel compelled to tip unless the service is good... gratefully, it usually is. They do charge a $4.00 per day maid fee to your check out bill. I'm not aware that this is optional. We leave the do not disturb sign on the door preferring to have the maid come in every couple of days. A bit choppy for the boat/snorkel excursion. The jungle/dune buggy trip was fun. Take money - you'll stop for lunch on the river, sample tequila & have cocktails. All in all it was a great time. We felt safe. Be firm about getting your needs met & all will be great.

I booked my trip on line and I loved everything in the hotel! The staff was very nice and professional. My room was great! Always clean! They even held my luggage while I shopped downtown before heading out to the airport!!! I would so go back!

Nice location but tricky sales staff

Prefer this hotel zone over downtown area. Quick taxi ride gets you into downtown for $5.00USD. Hotel was nice, good food but upon arrival the hotel staff will trick you into time-share sales for other "villa" properties but being overly helpful acting as if they are your personal concierge. The check-in staff will direct you to another staff member acting like the check in process is being continued with them, but instead they start their sales pitch after explaining the hotel features to you as if they're trying to be helpful when in actuality they are luring you in and wasting your time. However, once we were firm on "not interested" for the remainder of our stay they left us alone. The wait staff was great and our room was kept very clean. In fact, the entire property is kept nice at all times. This is a "credit only" hotel. Mandatory that all food, beverage, charges, etc be put on your card - no cash exchange during your stay. At check-out you have option to pay in pesos or bill to credit card. The will charge you appx. 40 pesos per day tip charges on your invoice. You could dispute it at the end of stay if you had bad service/ not satisfied etc.

overall less than expected

Great hotel for small children!

Our children are 3 years old and 18 months. Neither of them care for the heat so our priority is having a cool comfortable room, and a great pool. The Villa del Palmar had a very well stocked, clean and comfortable room with a full kitchen and bath - and an AMAZING pool! There is a large pool with a small waterslide and there is also a kiddie pool where there is a wading area that steps down to approximately 2 ft depth and then 4-5 ft. We could stand in the deeper part and supervise our toddler splashing in the wading pool - all while getting drinks brought to us poolside from the restaurant. :) This was a great value for the money. We shopped and stocked our refrigerator with basics to save money on eating out and were able to spend our time enjoying the beach and pools.
