One of the great things about lodging in Munich is that because it is a thriving business city, it is very easy to get affordable rates at the more luxurious properties on weekends--especially by going directly to their websites. We did that with several properties, and we ended up choosing the Le Meridien. Staying at a 5-star hotel in the middle of Munich at a rate of 125 euros, including breakfast, was just something we couldn't pass up.
We had a wonderful stay at the Le Meridien. I would have gladly payed much more for our experience there. The rooms are of decent size, with good German-style beds and bedding, a plasma television, and a marble bathroom. Since we had our baby with us, we really appreciated the crib set-up and a quiet room location overlooking a side-street.
The location is both good and bad. It is very convenient in that it is right across the street from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station); however, you can imagine that the neighborhood around the train station isn't the best. But it is also a very easy walk to the Marienplatz (with its Glockenspiel), the Asamkirche, the Hofbrauhaus, the shopping district, and many other attractions.
The hotel's staff was very helpful and efficient. They checked us in very efficiently, and ensured that our baby's crib was already set up and ready. When we were discussing things to do the front-desk staff were very happy to give us ideas and directions (we ended up getting a pass for Munich's public transportation from them and did a lot of wandering).
The hotel's restaurant, Le Potager, is also quite worth recommending. The breakfast buffet is quite large and diverse--they had everything from German weisswurst to Japanese miso and rice to made-to-order items. The selection of pastries, cereals, cold-cuts, fresh juices, etc., was almost overwhelming. In the warmer months there is an outdoor terrace/beer garden for seating. We had one dinner there, and I indulged myself by ordering Charleroi beef (arguably Europe's best). My wife had a special 3-course Spring menu and we both enjoyed ourselves very much.
We found the Le Meridien to be a great find, a terrific value, and a calm oasis in the middle of sometimes-hectic Munich. It is a great base from which to explore this city, or to simply do nothing in (there is a very good spa and indoor pool in the hotel). We will stay there again and again, and I'd gladly recommend it to others.
