Holiday Inn Passau

Service in Germany can sometimes be astonishingly bad. It is not rare to have a Faulty-Toweresque moment where you feel a restaurant or shop could be run perfectly smoothly if it was not for you adding the inconvenience of being a client physically present on the premises. However, enter any middle-class (or better) hotel and you suddenly find yourself in a different world. In contrast to other service establishments, German hotels not only seem able but indeed keen to train their staff in the intricacies of customer service. Feeling rather smug after having secured a double room for a rather splendidly low €48 all taxes included, we came face to face at check in with a sharply dressed hotel employee who upgraded us to a “comfort room” and insisted on treating us as if he had just succeeded in selling us the presidential suite at event-night rates.

The Holiday Inn Passau is right across the road from the Hauptbahnhof (station) in a modern shopping center (Donau Passage). We thus expected nothing in terms of character and frankly got none but we did get a clean, very comfortable, and modern room. Décor is typical Holiday-Inn-bland-but-not-offending. I was pleased with the kettle and two cups, things that you cannot take for granted in many German hotels. A small “Aufmerksamkeit” in the form of chocolates was left by management in the room. I’m not sure whether for being Priority Club members or simply because the management felt it would be nice.

Apart from the price, I picked the Holiday Inn for its swimming pool. After a long drive from Frankfurt and a trod through the old town, a swimming pool is the ideal place to relax and, more important, for wearing the children down for a good night’s sleep in a strange room. The heated indoor pool, although fairly small, oddly turned out nicer than the picture on the hotel’s website. A sauna and some fitness facilities are also available for free. The long opening hours, 6:30am to 10pm, saw me returning for a second swim early the following morning too.

Although the price was right, we decided not to have breakfast in the hotel as we felt like simply having a coffee and roll rather than a full buffet. Big mistake! Passau simply does not wake up early on Sunday morning. We walked the better part of the old town and were heading back to the hotel with an appetite that would do a buffet breakfast justice before we found a café open where we could feed ourselves on good coffee but rather tasteless croissants.

Being in a large mall, parking at the Holiday Inn is no problem with several spots reserved for hotel guests close to the elevators from the underground levels directly to the main lobby. However, with a room rate of €48, the parking charge of €9.20 seemed almost extravagant, but worth the convenience.
