Never Again

While the room itself had the basics and was good for our purpose; it was not clean. In particular was the fact that the linens had hairs on them and the sink had whiskers in it. The disposible cups we used. We were moved to the room next to us and this was worse after we started inspecting it. Again hairs on the linens, sink was not thoroghly clean and the underside and floor around the toilet was disgusting. While the manager assured us the room would be clean for the next day, that he would inspect it himself, it was still not great. I will say that the toilet area had been taken care of however not the linens---I could tell that the linens had not been changed by the stain that was noted in the top corner of the bottom sheet from the night before. The footie socks I was wearing are ruined, the dirt is stained into them. The area that the motel is in is rather scary, the business signage is not lit up at night making it difficult to find----not good for 2 women tracveling alone.

As a female traveling alone, I did not feel safe or secure in this hotel. When I checked in, the hotel clerk was behind a locked window with her two children, one with a significant behavior problem. Her room behind the locked window was air conditioned, the small and narrow entry way for check in was not. When I questioned my safety she tried to assure me that I was safe. There was no phone or clock in the room. The room was adequate as far as toilet, shower, cable, microwave, and small refrigerator. When I left in the AM a man stood at one of the hotel doors & watched me as I make several trips to load up my car. Weird. I would never stay there again.

Marina del Rey Beach Club

Best Things Nearby:
There is acutally very little located next to the Playa. It is on the outskirts of town by the marina. The bus is easily accessible, so going into town or getting around is not a problem. There is also a water shuttle, about 1/4-mile walk along the beach, that takes you across the marina entrance, and then you could walk into town. There are few vendors, which is nice. Taxis and pulmonias run all the time.

Best Things About the Resort:
The best thing is the heated pool, nice rooms with full amenities, and although the staff is limited, they are always helpful. This is a very low-key, laidback facility.

Resort Experience:
The Playa Maria only has 30 units. Only the first three buildings, or 18 units, have ocean views. There is a nice balcony off each room with a table and chairs that will easily handle four people. Some double rooms have a better view than the one bedrooms. The one-bedroom units have two queen-size beds in the master and a fold-out bed in the living room, and there is one bathroom. The dining room is large with a nice table that will seat six easily. The kitchen is an average size with good storage space and a four-burner stove, but no oven. There is a refrigerator to store food. The living room is pretty small. The second bedroom has two queen-size beds, a sitting area, and its own balcony. It also has a full kitchen with a two-burner stove and kitchen storage. The kitchens have a blender, toaster, dishes, microwave, pots and pans, and filtered water.

There is daily maid service and your towels are changed daily. The maids and staff are very pleasant. A small tip each day keeps everyone happy and maintains good service. There is a small heated pool that looks out over the ocean (a never-ending effect). I swam every day and had no trouble getting in. The first day there we had trouble getting a lounger, but after that it was no problem.

Happy Hour is every day from 4 to 6pm. The bartender’s name is Jenaro del Toro. I would suggest paying your bill nightly rather than running a tab. That way you can be sure of the bill.

There is a restaurant but we thought it was too expensive and the food was average.

The facility is very clean and comfortable.

Marina Del Rey

Best Things Nearby:
Not close to anything. You need to catch the bus to get into town. Basically peace and quiet.

Best Things About the Resort:
The room was huge, around 1800 square feet. It had a king bed in one room and two queens in the second room. There was also a comfortable hide a bed in the living room. Balcony overlooked the street and a wetlands preserve. The pool, although small was heated.

Resort Experience:
We bought this timeshare five years earlier and this was the first time back. It's typically Mexican in its decor. Had to have the kitchen sprayed for ants and a couple of cockroaches. They were right on top of it and we didn't see anymore while there. The maintenance has not been real good, but they were painting while we were there.

The unit has a full kitchen with oven and gas range and a medium sized refrigerator. The two bedroom unit was like being in a house and there were two great sized bathrooms, both with tubs. The one bedroom units, although equally as large had a very small bathroom.

We never had to worry about vendors because we were too far out for them to come and see us. We spent a lot of time swimming and lying in the sun. The staff was friendly, but after 5pm they all went home and there was a night guy at the desk. The restaurant on site was not the best food and only stayed open until 2pm. When we had a problem or needed something it was taken care of right away, but it's not a place where you will be pampered. It's down home. There was daily maid service and they changed your sheets in the middle of the week. So if it's solitude you're looking for, you've found it.

We enjoyed the people and made friends with one of the employees, Alberto Hernandez. We went on a private tour with Alberto and had fun. Besides other people we met, Alberto was the best thing that happened. He did a nice job on the tour and was a great 21 year old to deal with. He taught himself English and spoke the language extremely well. We met his family and were invited to his home. If you're looking for someone to do private trips give him a call at 01-669-983-1155 or send him an e-mail at "chumi_tak@hotmail.com. Tell him Dan and Corinne sent you. He will probaly be working at the Playa Maria next year, which is where we bought into. We sold the Marina Del Rey while we were there.

Best Things Nearby:
Marina del Rey Beach Club looks out across Mazatlan’s best beaches and surf to outlying islands. These islands offer great swimming, snorkeling, diving, and fishing.

Best Things About the Resort:
You will find lodging that suits your needs, and be asured you will all be close to the beach! The staff is friendly and very helpful! We visited the resort twice (in November 1999 and on Christmas 2002). We'll be back!

Resort Experience:
All guests, furthermore, whether owners or one-time renters, receive the same tender loving service. Most of us North-Americans, spend our time in the Zona Dorada (Gold Zone).

Mazatlan meaning `land of the deer` in the ancient Nahuatl language offers 10 miles of inviting sandy beaches. It`s no wonder Mazatlan plays host to more than one million visitors per year. These vacationers will find plenty to keep them busy in Mazatlan. Earth, sea and sky unite to offer an excellent destination for all types of travellers.
