Rio de Janeiro, What to Do and Where to Stay!

I higly reccomend going to Rio and stay in Hostels- more fun!
I stayed at Arpoador Sun House- www.arpoadorbeachhouse.com
and i had a great time and did amazing activities!

I did a city tour with Brazil Expedition they are very cheap in comparison with other tour companies! The guide was funny and made the effort to tell us interesting facts. We didn't know what to expect being that it was our first tour, but we actually got our money's worth. We even met Selaron on the tour! (the famous artist who created the acclaimed steps in Lapa) He was working on the actual steps during our visit and signed tiles for us. Great experience.
I reccomend to go any time of the year but check the tips with those guys at www.brazilexpedition.com - they know everything about Rio!

Not a 5 Star Facility as promised!

Traveled with Viking Tours to the hotel which was marketed as a 5 Star hotel - It wasn't. The hotel was poorly maintained. Wall paper coming off walls, carpets soiled, bathroom fixtures not completely attached, sheets torn, arms of chairs in lobby falling apart and doors not maintailed. More equivalent to a very poor Quality inn. Staff was helpful with the exception of the fitness center where I was ejected for wearing jeans. Will not be using Sheraton in the future for Business or Pleasure as they do not respond to submitted complaints.

Here you are captive to prices!

Since the hotel sits away from any commercial area, they can captively overcharge for food. I would recommend a hotel on Copacabana or Ipanema as better value. The rooms include breakfast and you have a wide variety of restuarant options available within walking distance.

It's Great!!!

Good Hotel Not Location

Good Hotel Not Location

The Sheraton Rio is a good hotel by South American standards. The location is not so great. You have to take a taxi to Copacabana or Ipanema beach which are the most popular in Rio.

The hotel does have it's own beach although it's not private. Their pool is fantastic and is perfect for lunch as they have menu service. Their is a fitness centre which is ok. You have to pay extra to access it and the spa area. If you have an executive room you have complimentary entry.

Rooms can be a hit or miss at this hotel. I've stayed here several times and each room was different than the last. Some rooms are renovated and some not. Try and get the ocean view room, it's breathtaking as it overlooks the Lebon & Ipanema beaches.

If you have the choice of upgrading to an executive room I would advise it. It includes free breakfast and evening tapas along with drinks, bottled water. The cost of breakfast alone pays for the upgrade. Plus you also get use of the business centre on the 4th floor across from the lounge. It has complimentary internet access compared to the business centre by the lobby which charges $3USD for 15min. The hotel does not provide in-room internet.

The hotel room service is horrible. Slow service and food quality and selection is rather poor. If you are going to eat at the hotel try the buffet lunch or dinner at least you can find something you'll like and stick with it. Bufett lunch is $18USD dinner is $24USD includes coffee and a beverage.

Avoid walking to and from the hotel at night. It is not safe at all. Very poor street lighting.

There is a mall called Sao Conrado Fashion Mall near by. But you'll have to cab it. They have your typical Nike, Addidas and some local shops but if you really want great shopping with better prices, I suggest street shopping on Ave. Nossa Senhora de Copacabana.

The hotel does offer car service which is better than taking taxi's basically you buy a block amount of time and their drivers takes you where you want to go.

There is an ATM teller machine located in the hotel lobby.

This is a good budget hotel but the money you save on the room you spend on transportation.

I would stay here but it wouldn't be my first or second choice probably my third.
