The lobby and outdoor areas are quite pleasant, including ...Read more The Sheraton Rio is a chain hotel with adequate sized, poorly maintained rooms with dated decor, significant maintenance problems, and staff that were less helpful than they should have been. The lobby and outdoor areas are quite pleasant, including the ?private beach? which is accessible from the pool area. Technically, all beaches in Rio are public; however, rocks rising 50 to 100 feet from the ocean at both ends of the property mean that the beach can only be reached three ways: from the hotel, by boat, or by climbing down 5-10 flights of stairs from the road. A few locals do make the climb. There were plenty of comfortable beach chairs, regular chairs and benches in the pool area overlooking the beach. The view of the bay, including nearby Ipanema beach, is superb. The coast runs east and west in this area, and the hill on the north side of the street casts a lengthy shadow. As a result, at this time of year (late June) the beach was in shadow by about 3:30 pm every day and all the people would leave. Restaurants were good but fairly expensive and unimaginative. Breakfast is a buffet with a full American assortment including real scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes, a full continental breakfast assortment including several cheeses and cold cuts, a full Asian breakfast assortment (congee, nori, seasonings, etc.), many fruits and juices, and an interesting range of sweet and savory pastries including the ubiquitous cheese bread. The other buffet restaurant had ?theme nights? but we were unable to distinguish one theme from another. ?Flavors of Mexico? night featured churrasco (grilled meats), pasta with marinara sauce, vegetables au gratin, and feijoada with farofa. ?Brazilian Specialties? night was the same except the vegetables were steamed. Desserts were tasty but other than the fresh fruit they tended to be very sweet. One exception was the flan, which was very good. The room layout is efficient and there are enough electrical outlets at 110V. Maintenance was a problem. When I pulled a plug from one outlet at the end of our stay, the outlet came out of the wall. We could tell when we were approaching our room down the long hall by the large stain in the hall carpet opposite the door. The design of the carpet is dated and looks like a series of beach towels laid end-to-end. Wallpaper in the halls was peeling badly in some areas, as was the paint on the furniture on the balcony. Adjusting the thermostat in the room had no effect on the temperature, and our room was always too cold, particularly considering that the temperatures outside were only in the mid-70s. Condensation from the air conditioner dripped through a light fixture into the carpet outside the bathroom. We asked them to fix it, which they did. They next day, it was dripping again, and we called them to fix it again. The day after that, it was dripping again. The only choice was to turn it off. Then the room gets stuffy, particularly after taking a shower. Because of the hillside location, the lobby is on the 6th floor. Everything else is an elevator ride away. The pool, fitness center, beach and three of the restaurants are on zero. Sometimes we got into a down elevator and it went up, and vice-versa. Two of the six elevators became so erratic that they were taken out of service while we were there. We searched but could not find a conventional hotel gift shop with snacks & toiletries. Internet access is good. The wireless system actually works, and you can get 30 consecutive minutes of free access per day. You can also use a bank of half a dozen Ethernet-connected machines in the lobby for up to 30 minutes, including printing a few pages per day. More than that will cost you about $12/day. If you want a taxi, it is possible to walk 50 feet down the driveway, raise your hand, and get a taxi within a few minutes, as they are going by the hotel all the time. However, the door man seemed to be incapable of this skill. Tell him you want a taxi, and he will look like you asked for a sample of lunar soil. You have to hope someone else is taking a taxi to the hotel; then when they alight at the door, he will hold the (already open) taxi door for you, just in case you want to tip him. We arrived at about 11 am because the flights from Miami are overnight. However, check-in time is 3 pm and since we had not asked for early arrival, we had to wait in the lobby for about four hours to get our room. Leaving on another overnight (to Dallas), we asked for a late departure and were allowed to stay in our room until 2 pm at no additional cost. Regular check-out time is 11 am. We had no other Rio hotels to compare against, but any number of moderately priced chains in the US would put this hotel?s accommodations to shame. Close

2nd floor ocean front...king bed.......9 bed bugs bites........i have pictures..........carpet stained and the room needs paint......pool area and lobby new nice

Since the hotel sits away from any commercial area, they can captively overcharge for food. I would recommend a hotel on Copacabana or Ipanema as better value. The rooms include breakfast and you have a wide variety of restuarant options available ...Read more
