Best Hotel on the Beach

Best Hotel on the Beach

I can only give the Rio Othon Palace the best reviews. Our plane landed in Rio early morning and they had our room ready even though it was hours before check-in time. The staff was helpfull in filling all our needs including changing money, room service and setting up a tour. The room was clean when we got there and cleaned everyday. The views of Cococabana Beach were incredible. The swimming pool on the 30th floor was wonderful and also clean. The location is perfect....restaurants and cafes within walking distance. The hotel did have iternet service but the charge was high. No problem though because there was an internet place around the corner...along with a pharmacy and grocery store. The gym next to the pool was nice and clean with a sauna and steam room....they do charge $10 per visit. The restaurant was a little pricey but the food was incredible. The included buffet breakfast had everything from eggs and quiche to bread and rolls, sausages, bacon and all that great tropical fruit. We spent 10 days there and looked at other hotels along Ave. Atlantica....nothing compares. Great place!

overpriced

I was at this hotel between 6/7/9 to 6/11/9. When I made the reservation it said shuttle service to and from the hotel, I called and I was told it was only from the hotel to the airport but finally it is just on certain hours and because I was taking an early flight I could not use it. The hotel is outdated I think is asking for a renovation, the room itself looked old and the tiny balcony extremely unsafe. I will say the staff is very nice and the security is awesome. The breakfast buffet was ok although you would expect more variety in food specially fruits in a country like brazil. I did not use the restaurant in the top floor because it is as overpriced as the hotel, specially in an area with many choices as Copacabana is. There are 2 fitness center but it is not included in the package, I don't think worth the price you pay for a regular room that is why next time I won't stay in there.

Outstanding staff

The rooms are somewhat dated, and both rooms I had did not have locks on the sliding doors. The furnishings vary in age. That said, the staff was courteous and prompt. I was upgraded at no cost to a better room, and there seemed to be a pervasive spirit among the employees toward providing guests with a positive experience. The breakfast buffet was great, and the room service was outstanding. All factors considered, the hotel is a good value, and the room views of Copacabana and Sugerloaf are classic.

Rio Othon Palace

Rio Othon Palace

The Rio Othon Palace is the kind of palace that belongs to the black-sheep duke who gets no tithe from his peasants to keep the place up! At the time I was there, the whole thing was shabby, from the lobby (stained and threadbare couches and rugs) to the hallways (carpet so worn down it could have been linoleum) and a room so dated I felt like I was in an original episode of the Charlie's Angels. I suppose I would have put up with this if I felt I was getting a deal, but I really overpaid. While the concierges were very kind and helpful, they still tried to sell me packaged tours. Also, they refused to hail me a taxi, but insisted that I always take their car service everywhere, which was totally overpriced.

However, my room did have a gorgeous view of Copacabana beach, and it was five minutes total from room to shore (which made it easy to lie on the beach even when I had only an hour between appointments). I did seem to notice too that they were renovating the place floor by floor. There was a rooftop pool next to the restaurant (which served a decent mozarella, tomato and basil sandwich).

To sum up: there are many other places to stay in Rio that are on the beaches that are a better value or just better-kept.
