Modern, Comfortable and Good Value

  • February 26, 2009
  • Rated 4 of 5 by Porchet from Chicago, Illinois
The Hotel Tropical in Manaus, Brazil is a large, comfortable, modern hotel, even by US standards. The nearly 600 rooms offer air conditioning, mini-bars, cable TV and 24-hour room service, as well as many other modern amenities.

Food service includes two restaurants and three bars, and wireless internet is also available from designated locations for an additional fee.

In addition to the on-site hair salon, travel agency and jewelry store, Hotel Tropical has its own on-premises zoo which serves as a sanctuary for animals that are not able to return to the wild. It includes regional fauna such as monkeys, tropical birds and even jaguars!

The service throughout was superior, and though the price was not cheap (rooms started at $200 US/night), we found it to be a good value. Most of the staff spoke good English, and communication was not an issue.

Located just minutes from town and mere steps away from the Rio Negro, Hotel Tropical is an excellent, safe, modern choice to serve as home base for your Amazon adventures.

The rooms can vary depending on which wing of the hotel you're in, the rooms in the newer additions have much more modern decor. The rooms themselves are nice but unspectacular. The older rooms have much more charm with hardwood floors and mahogany furniture. The newer rooms have less character, but the air conditioning in these rooms seems to work better!

The hotel is a wonderful place. The mini-zoo will give you a sneak preview of what you may see on your jungle tour. An on-site travel agency with English-speaking staff can arrange yours for you. The pool area, surrounded by gardens with giant turtles and lily-pads, is gorgeous. The price of the rooms does include a breakfast buffet consisting of an impressive array of fruits, breads, juices in addition to eggs, cereal and the other usual suspects. The walkway over the pool area is a great place to watch the sunset on a clear night. The shopping mall outside the store has about a dozen stores or so, with places to buy essentials such as bottled water and film, and souveneirs as well. A large, sprawling complex, it can be difficult to find your way around the Tropical at times, but there are signs to mark the way and the friendly staff members are always willing to help.

Overall, the place is well worth the price.

Very nice. Building is old though and furniture looks antique. The 2 pools are beautiful. Has a free zoo. Many activities like tennis, basketball, archery, horseback riding, but you have to pay for these extra activities.

Tropical Hotel

This Hotel is situated in the proximity of the Amazon River and has transportation to and from the airport. Pool, tennis court and even a small zoo with animals from the area. Rooms are large and comfortable but you have to walk quite a bit to reach it since the hotel has only 1 floor and is extensive.

The hotel is certainly Manaus's best, although it's also expensive (travel packages often give better tarifs). Rooms are comfortable and the buffet breakfast, which is included in the price, is delicious. The hotel is located at Ponta Negra, a residential area. Travel agencies located at the hotel lobby can arrange tours, many of which departing from the hotel's deck. There is a mini zoo with native animals of the Amazon. Check out the Tropical Hotel
