El Moro Tower El Cid at Mazatlan

  • January 23, 2003
  • Rated 4 of 5 by 4nzics from moreno valley, California
Best Things Nearby:
Old Mazatlan and Nuevo Mazatlan for shopping.

Best Things About the Resort:
The room we had on the 17th floor overlooking the ocean was wonderful. Also, the fact that the entire time of our stay we were not bombarded with representatives trying to pressure us into a presentation. An added bonus for my husband was getting to meet and take photos with the boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, who happened to be dining at the table next to us. According to our waiter, he comes to El Cid.

Resort Experience:
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the resort. I also enjoyed the fact that a lot of the activities could be taken care of right on the beach in front of the resort, e.g. Waverunners, parasailing, etc.

El Cid Resort - El Moro Tower

Best Things Nearby:
El Cid is huge 720 acre resort that includes several hotels, a country club and 27 hole golfcourse, and a marina complete with boats to rent for sailing or fishing. El Moro Tower is more or less centrally located and is right on the beach. La Pergola Theatre, featuring nightly live shows is located beneath El Moro Tower, while El Caracol Dance Club is located next door. Restaurants, shops and bars line Camaron Sabalo in both directions. Follow it south to Valentino's, where Camaron Sabalo ends and the Malecon begins. Valentino's is a unique place: part bar, part restaurant, part shop, part dance club, and all party. It is definitely the place to be after dark. If you want jewelry bargains, try Miguel's. While I don't recall the exact address, it is on the east side of Camaron Sabalo, about 2 blocks south of El Moro Tower, and is located next to Michael's Gallery. Miguel's has a small sign and is difficult to find. But if you find Michael's Gallery, which is much easier, just go one store to your left, and you are in shopper's heaven. It's not fancy, so if you want atmosphere, stay next door at Michael's Gallery. But if you want honest bargains, with a minimum of fuss and haggling, try Miguel's. By the way, there is no connection between the stores, despite the names.

Best Things About the Resort:
Everything. Literally. First and foremost, El Cid is clean. You could eat off the floor. And you can drink straight from the tap as they have their own resort-wide water purification system. Even the pools, complete with waterfalls and swim-up bars are filled with purified water. One of the pools winds around much of the resort and was, at one time, the largest single swimming pool in the world. It is still the largest in Mexico. El Cid allows you to buy all-inclusive days after you arrive at the rate of $55.00 per day. This allows you the financial freedom to scout out the many other wonderful restaurants, although La Concha Restaurant at El Moro Tower is excellent. And the daily maid service is simply the best.

Resort Experience:
Going to El Cid is like going home. The staff is friendly, courteous, and really goes the extra mile to be accommodating without being intrusive. The service is the best I've experienced anywhere. Really. Most staff members speak at least some English, and many speak it quite well. The rooms are large and comfortable, and even have U.S. satellite television. All of the rooms have spectacular ocean views, and balconies complete with patio furniture from where you can watch the sun sink into the ocean every night. All the rooms are air conditioned, with ceiling fans, direct dial telephones, kitchenettes, and private baths. Each room also has a private safe for valuables, but you don't need it. The staff is completely honest, and after accidently leaving my digital video camera lying out one day, we never used it again. Other amenities include guided tours, by both bus and boat, a fitness center, an organized Kids Club with planned activities for children, a ropes and wall climbing course, as well as various resort organized games and daily activities poolside. Check out the spa for a sunset massage in your own private cabana on the beach. Add a few margaritas, pina coladas or a daquari or two, and you are ready to be draped over a towel rack until morning.

Best Things Nearby:
The fabulous beach (of course), where you can tan until you can't find yourself in the dark, and the golf course.

Best Things About the Resort:
I loved the spa, beautiful pools, and the daily maid service!

Resort Experience:
It's nice to be in Mazatlan - very low key as compared to Cancun or Puerto Vallarta.

The resort is a large 25 story tower width a couple of pools plus a couple of other buildings with a few pools. They provide full services including a travel and tour office, shops, a spa and a fitness center. The restaurants have both buffet and regular menu items. Prices are very reasonable. Unlike time shares in the United States, there is full maid service daily. Nice.

This is a mega resort in that they have several other facilities - one is just across the street and has a 27 hole championship golf course. Another is their newest - the Marina El Cid Hotel and Yacht Club with free shuttles going between all facilities. You can dine at any of the resorts.

It's fun to do nothing but relax poolside or walk around the beach. It's also very easy to hop on the public bus and soak up the downtown atmosphere. They stop in front of the Tower resort.

cottages

We rented several different cottages in Nova Scotia using the 'Doer's and Dreamer's' book available free from 1-88-565-0000. All the rates were reasonable, often the scenery was outstanding and we really got off the beaten path.

Canadian laws are very strict as to what the cottages must have: including: 4 burner stove with full size oven, frig, microwave, electric tea kettle, all manner of dishes and pots and pans etc. We had both 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom cottages. Warning: pet peeve--why only one bathroom when you often had 2 or 3 couples? We carried some of our own cookware, which was unnecessary. The beds were fully made up. The bathroom always had enough towels and toilet paper. Also a fair amount of soap, but we had our own also.

Many cottage ownsers are quite creative and add much more to their cottages. Some had a tv (once with cable) and a local telephone. The cottages were often much better than we expected for the price. The price per room in the box above really doesn't fit a cottage situation. We paid about $350-450 per couple per week CANADIAN. For every 2 US dollars you get about 3 Canadian. Or really roughly about $67 US per day for the whole cottage. More or less. A very reasonable way to travel especially if you have kids and/or like a peaceful holiday.

From journal Nova Scotia in August--wonderful
