Marina el Cid Hotel & Yacht Club

  • April 21, 2003
  • Rated 4 of 5 by billjan from Port Alberni, British Columbia
Best Things Nearby:
Just the activity of the Yacht Club. Lots of coming and going of sports fishing boats and magnificent yachts.

Best Things About the Resort:
The pools are perfect. One warm for the chickens and a large cool pool with waterfalls/caves and a really hot hot tub.

Resort Experience:
The resort is very nice. A number of four story buildings surrounding the marina and pools, all different colors and architectural details with nice balconies or patios on each. Very quiet. We did not use the laundry facilities, but they are there. The little store closes early, but the shuttle runs to the outskirts of the Golden Zone really frequently. We never waited more than five minutes to get a ride. We all agreed that it was one of our nicest stays.

Very nice resort. We were not hounded by the timeshare pitch after we missed our appointment as we were on a presentation to another place (better gifts). Excellent housekeeping, quiet, beautiful, and the grounds are impecably kept. We did take the launch to the beach one day, but the pools were so great (one warm, one cool) that we basically just swam at the pools. The beach is very nice and clean and you can get there in only a minute or so. We never saw anyone have to wait any longer than a couple minutes for the water taxi to take them there or back.

Just lovely waking up to the activity of the Marina. Lots of boats coming and going, and yet very quiet. We witnessed the sports fishermen returning each morning with their large/exotic/colorful catch. Also very entertained by the many iguana everywhere. All in all one of the nicest resorts we have stayed in, and we only choose Gold Crown.

Best Things Nearby:
Public transportation right in the front of the hotel to take you to anything in the city. The Restaurant is very elegant yet moderately priced.

Best Things About the Resort:
Beautiful, clean, and friendly.

Resort Experience:
You feel like you're in your own little city with everything right in the premises of the hotel, but yet very isolated from the hubbub of the city. Walkways are all around the hotel for taking strolls. The rooms are very spacious with porches set with a table and chairs for dining outside if you want or just relaxing and enjoying the view of the ocean and the yachts in the harbor.

Best Things Nearby:
The marina and great view.

Best Things About the Resort:
Quieter choice than in the hub of the Golden Zone, but only a five minute free shuttle to the sister resort.

Resort Experience:
Our unit viewed the Marina (not the ocean). The suite was nicely decorated. Beds were rather firm! Restaurants are pricey, but there's so many others to choose from, so it's not a problem. Small convenience store on premises.

Marina El Cid

Best Things Nearby:
On-Site Amenities:
- Pools (2) on site;
- Beach is across the Marina and is very nice however shuttle only runs from 8:30am to 6pm, which means no early morning or evening walks on the beach;
- Coin operated laundry is available near other retail;
- Small grocer on site (we went to Mega store near Sam's Club);
- Limited food on site with one restaurant and bar, plus pool food/drinks;
- Free shuttle 'til 11pm to the other El Cid properties, spa and, golf. Much more activity there if that's your thing.

Best Things About the Resort:
Quiet place with quiet beach (few vendors). Very relaxing. Very friendly people of all ages.

Resort Experience:
Our two-bedroom unit (two suites with connecting door) had two kitchens. The main unit has one bedroom with king bed, bath, living room, and kitchen. The connecting suite has two double beds, living room, and kitchen.

Maid service: Yes, daily. The unit was quite clean, with no bugs (always a good thing!).

Kitchens: bring a sharp knife, corkscrew, and dish soap. Our kitchens were low on bowls, etc., though it did have dishes for four people.

Snorkeling/Diving: The water isn't clear, so don't bother. We ran across a man-of-war on the beach--beware!
