Marina El Cid Hotel & Yacht Club

Best Things Nearby:
Shopping in Old Town; the beach; the restaurants in town.

Best Things About the Resort:
We found the hotel manager went above and beyond his duty to help us out when we had a problem with a local vendor who tried to rip us off and even paid off two policia to show up at the hotel to intimidate us. The hotel manager also sent an interpreter with us when we had to go deal with this vendor. It was scary and without the help of the hotel manager and staff, the experience would have been much worse.

Resort Experience:
ACCOMMODATIONS: We stayed in a two-bedroom unit (a one-bedroom unit with a door that connects to a studio unit). We stayed in rooms 420 and 421, which were on the top floor of the building that overlooks the pool nearest the lobby. A second pool is located in front of the last building that overlooks the ocean. Our view was nice, overlooking the pool and marina. The only building with an ocean view is located at the end of the property. That building is "integrated" with the second pool, which has waterfalls and caves and a very large jacuzzi. The water in that pool was too cold to swim in. The water in the pool nearest us was very warm.

The room was spacious, clean but spartan. The TVs were old and our son couldn't connect his Game Cube to any of them. We had to buy a special connector from town. TV reception was crummy and there were only eight stations, four of them local Mexican stations.

There is no oven in the kitchen, and only two burners on the stove. There is a half-sized microwave oven, and a small fridge. There was also a toaster, a coffee maker, blender, dishes, pots and pans, and silverware. Bring paper towels! The laundry facility is located at the end of the marina. It cost 15 pesos (about US$1.50) to wash/dry a load.

The beds and the couch were made of concrete with a mattress on top. We ordered another pad to put on top of the mattress, but it was still so hard that we never got a full night's rest. The air conditioners blow a lot of air (and humidity) into the rooms, but the air never gets cold. We ended up just keeping the doors/windows open all day/night to keep the room cool.

MARINA EL CID RESTAURANTS: The first night we had the buffet at the restaurant in the lobby area. It was horrible, and it was also overpriced. We also ate at the little restaurant that was near the pool. We ordered hamburgers, but received these things with what looked like meatloaf patties that were disgusting and undercooked. We ate at the restaurant one more time and had the breakfast buffet. That was actually quite good. Other than those three times, we ate in town.

TIMESHARE PRESENTATION: When did go through the presentation. However, we were grumpy from no sleep on the hard mattresses and had a terrible meal in the restaurant. So we weren't interested in buying there. They didn't give us a hard sell and they didn't bother us about it the rest of the trip.

OVERALL: We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and, although the cost to rent the place was very affordable, overall, we just could not recommend it and we would not stay there again.

Best Things Nearby:
Charter fishing boats depart from here. Beautiful beaches all around with easy access. You can eat at the resort, walk, or use free transportation.

Best Things About the Resort:
Friendly, helpful staff and very large and well-maintained accommodations.

Resort Experience:
This is an ideal resort for the fisherman. It is a short walk to the dock and it's fun even on the days you don't fish to see what comes in around 2pm. Friendly crew is happy to share in the catch of the day, and with a full kitchen in your accommodations and a restaurant more than happy to cook it for you, it's a great chance to eat fish at its freshest. The staff goes out of their way to be friendly and helpful and it adds to the experience. Very friendly atmosphere with all rooms having porches or balconies. Easy to make new travel acquaintances.

Best Things Nearby:
There isn't a lot "nearby" but there is easy taxi/bus access to the Golden Zone (the shopping district), plenty of restaurants, beaches and old town, which was my favorite.

Best Things About the Resort:
It was a bit isolated on the far north end of town. That was nice in that it was relatively quiet. There was plenty of room in the one-bedroom unit. The pool was amazing, complete with a cave and rock waterslide. There was a second pool that was less party and more relaxing, so a great set of choices.

Resort Experience:
The resort is on the far north end of town. From the airport, it's a bit of a ride...30 minutes to an hour. The staff is extremely friendly and everything very well kept. Take advantage of the free ride to the main El Cid resort and indulge in their beautiful pool. Across the street is a $1 scoop of ice cream at Dolphies. Make time to go to the market and chuch in Old Town...it's worth the trip. While you're down there, go to Pedro y Lola's restaurant. Don't miss out on the shopping in the Golden Zone either. Be careful about your credit card use there. We had our number stolen somehow and it was used heavily. The CC company took care of it, but just beware.

Best Things Nearby:
Beaches, pools, marina, shuttle service

Best Things About the Resort:
The professional staff and the wonderful, clean and spacious units.

Resort Experience:
The units here are very clean, spacious, well equipped and comfortable. The beds are very good providing a restful night's sleep. The staff is professional and helpful. The only difference that we noted from this year's stay compared with last year's stay is that the dining staff is not as organized as last year and the food is not quite as good as last year. Room service is also not as good as last year.

Still, all in all, this is a great resort to stay at! The El Cid family of resorts does everything in its power to ensure that you do have an enjoyable stay and we would definitely recommend this resort to anyone!

El Cid Marina and Yacht Club

We stayed at the Marina El Cid on a timeshare exchange. The rooms and the grounds at this five star resort are beautiful and very well kept. The resort's staff was always helpful and available whatever the situation. The rooms were cleaned every day while we were away, we never had to wait for a taxi no matter what time it was and there was even a security guard keeping an eye on us while the timeshare sharks were swarming around. The resort has two beautiful swimming pools: one is freshwater and the other is a seawater pool. There are activities and classes daily, or you can get your hair braided, get a henna tattoo or paint ceramics all right there around the pool. The freshwater pool has a swim up bar for food and drinks.

The sunsets in Mazatlan are truly spectacular, and the view from our terrace was awesome. We could sit and watch the sun set along with the action of the Marinas. The boats from the "New Marina" down the street also had to pass through El Cid on their way out to sea and back.

The El Cid resort has a private beach and club house across the marina with a water taxi to get you there. There are four El Cid Hotel/resorts in Mazatlan and they provide complimentary transportation between all four. This is a place with class that you can see and feel. Other extras include: Aries Sportfishing Fleet at the marina, a tour reservations office to plan your trips, golfing, sailing excursions and a restaurant and convenience store to name a few.
