Marina El Cid Hotel & Yacht Club

Best Things Nearby:
Pool and access to the other resorts

Best Things About the Resort:
Quiet, well maintained, and friendly staff

Resort Experience:
The resort is well maintained and the room was large enough for two people. I liked that we had access to the other resorts, as the beach by Marina el Cid had a lot of jellyfish. However, the pools at the Marina were less crowded...which allowed you to just relax and enjoy. Staff were friendly and accommodating.

Best Things Nearby:
The ocean.

Best Things About the Resort:
The atmosphere of a quaint, old-time fishing village.

Resort Experience:
This place is airy, tropical, and located on a marina sporting beautiful yachts surrounded by a myriad of pools featuring waterfalls and tunnels. There is a small boat that shuttles you free to the adjacent beach – there was a beach that was virtually empty with lovely palapas to lie under, a small beach bar, and great waves, which is unlike your typical, tranquil Caribbean beach.

Although we had reserved only a one-bedroom unit, the very friendly staff upgraded us to a Junior suite on the fifth floor with a breathtaking view of the pounding ocean from our front door, and an equally impressive view of the beach, pools, and marina (with the exception of the barge) from our living room and bedroom. We loved the airy feel of the furnishings, the clean white tile flooring, HUGE tiled shower with multiple sinks, adorned with flowers the housekeepers constructed out of tissues. (How do they do that?) We found no problems with our television as suggested by member mbwalker who visited in January of this year (apparently his son could not hook up his Game Cube); however, we were not there to play video games and watch TV -- we can do that at home! We also do not go on vacation to cook (member mbwalker also bemoaned the lack of an oven) as part of a true vacation is enjoying the local cuisine. Nevertheless, we DID have an oven in our junior suite, which we did not use, and if this was really important, we would have asked for a suite.

The only thing I would not recommend at this resort is the sport fishing, as the boat are older, small, and hence not very stable on the wavy sea here. (We spent most of our time hurling off the side and never did eat the lunch we had to provide at our expense, as there are no refreshments on board, save water.) Nevertheless, I am still glad I had the opportunity to try this exciting sport and not only felt the thrill of hooking a dorado, but also learned how to bait my own hook from the friendly crew!

All in all, a great time was had by both of us and while the on-site restaurant's food was average at best (who stays on property to eat anyway?), the local eateries were fantastic! Go to Mazatlan, especially the Marina El Cid, for the flavor of a Mexican seacoast village, and get out and see the beautiful countryside!

Our one-bedroom was very clean. There was a small kitchen. The bathroom had two separate sinks, which made getting ready easier. The bedroom had a king-size bed and the unit had a large balcony. All units faced the marina and the pools.

Shopping in the Golden Zone and good dining.

Best Things About the Resort:
The accommodations were spacious and very clean.

Resort Experience:
We have a two-bedroom unit. The one-bedroom unit had a king-size bed, a large dressing area (two sinks and a mirror), a large walk-in tiled shower, full kitchen with dining table for four, living room, and a small balcony that spanned the living area and bedroom. Our children shared the lock-out unit that adjoined our unit. They loved having the two queen-size beds, partial kitchen, full bath, and living room all to themselves. They also had the end unit in the building with a very large balcony that overlooked the free-form pool below. The view from both balconies and our windows was lovely.

Dining at the resort was good, but local restaurants were better. We did not participate in resort activities, but there was always something going on at the pool located in the center of the complex.

ACCOMMODATIONS: We stayed in a two-bedroom unit (a one-bedroom unit with a door that connects to a studio unit). We stayed in rooms 420 and 421, which were on the top floor of the building that overlooks the pool nearest the lobby. A second pool is located in front of the last building that overlooks the ocean. Our view was nice, overlooking the pool and marina. The only building with an ocean view is located at the end of the property. That building is "integrated" with the second pool, which has waterfalls and caves and a very large Jacuzzi. The water in that pool was too cold to swim in. The water in the pool nearest us was very warm.

The room was spacious, clean, but spartan. The TVs were old and our son couldn't connect his Game Cube to any of them. We had to buy a special connector from town. TV reception was crummy and there were only eight stations, four of them were local Mexican stations. There is no oven in the kitchen, and only two burners on the stove. There is a half-sized microwave oven and a small fridge. There was also a toaster, a coffee maker, blender, dishes, pots and pans, and silverware. Bring paper towels!

The laundry facility is located at the end of the Marina. It cost 15 pesos (about $1.50US) to wash/dry a load. The beds and the couch were made of concrete with a mattress on top. We ordered another pad to put on top of the mattress, but it was still so hard that we never got a full night's rest. The air conditioners blow a lot of air (and humidity) into the rooms, but the air never gets cold. We ended up just keeping the doors/windows open all day/night to keep the room cool.

MARINA EL CID RESTAURANTS: The first night we had the buffet at the restaurant in the lobby area. It was horrible, and was also overpriced. We also ate at the little restaurant that was near the pool. We ordered hamburgers, but received these things with what looked like meatloaf patties that were disgusting and undercooked. We ate at the restaurant one more time, and had the breakfast buffet. That was actually quite good. Other than those three times, we ate in town.

TIMESHARE PRESENTATION: We did go through the presentation. However, we were grumpy from no sleep on the hard mattresses and had a terrible meal in the restaurant. So we weren't interested in buying there. They didn't give us a hard sell, and they didn't bother us about it the rest of the trip.

OVERALL: We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and, although the cost to rent the place was very affordable, overall, we just could not recommend it, and we would not stay there again.
