Getting There: If Tashkent had nothing but this hotel to offer, I'd work it in to my itinerary as a stopover. I worked hard at flying here NOT USING the national carrier, Uzbekistan Airways. Try a British Air flight using British Med (BMed) into Tashkent and I'd strongly suggest it over Uzbekistan Airways.
The cab drivers will try and get as much as US$40 from you. Going from the airport to downtown should not cost more than 7,000 UZD (soum) or about US$5. The Dedeman is about a 15-minute drive from the airport in the evening.
Who stays there: Most of the diplomatic mission folks stay at either the Intercontinental or the Dedeman. As an indirect recommendation, I've heard of mission members moving from the Intercontinental to the Dedeman, but never the other way around.
What to ask for: If you want quiet, ask for a room on the eighth floor. This is a newish hotel, the rooms are well appointed, wired Internet access in the room is free, breakfast is often included in the room rate, and the staff works very hard to please the guests.
